The biological man arrested outside Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home in June 2022 — Nicholas John Roske, who has pleaded not guilty to attempting to assassinate a U.S. Supreme Court justice — has delivered a new surprise for the court and the public.
Court filings and online activity reveal Roske now identifies as a transgender woman and is being referred to by the name “Sophie” on platforms like Reddit and Discord.
According to The Post Millennial, Roske came out as transgender earlier this month and began using the name Sophie in court communications, though the legal name Nicholas John Roske remains unchanged. Some court documents now refer to Roske with female pronouns “out of respect for Ms. Roske” and at the request of defense counsel:
Roske, who has pleaded “not guilty” to attempting to kill or kidnap a U.S. judge, failed to physically harm anyone as when he arrived by cab at Kavanaugh’s Chevy Chase home at 1:05 am, he called 911 on himself, telling the operator he was having “suicidal thoughts,” and wanted to kill the justice, upon seeing deputy U.S. Marshals stationed outside of his residence. The Montgomery County Police Department arrived on the scene and took Roske into custody before he could carry out the crime, the New York Post reported.
According to prosecutors, when investigators searched Roske’s suitcase and a backpack that he was carrying, they found a tactical police vest, a tactical knife, pepper spray, zip ties, a Glock 17 pistol, and two magazines and ammunition. They also found an array of burglary tools, including a hammer, a screwdriver, a nail punch, a crowbar, a pistol light, duct tape, and a pair of hiking boots with padding on the outside of the soles, among other items.
The original incident occurred on June 8, 2022, when Roske traveled from Simi Valley, California, to Chevy Chase, Maryland, where Justice Kavanaugh lives. Roske, reportedly enraged over the leaked draft of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision (which later overturned Roe v. Wade), arrived near the justice’s home after 1 a.m. carrying an arsenal of weapons and tools.
Upon noticing U.S. Marshals stationed outside the home, Roske turned away, contacted a family member, and then dialed 911. In the call, Roske stated an intent to kill a Supreme Court justice and also expressed suicidal thoughts.
Police arrested Roske without incident. No one was harmed.
