In a striking display of unity at a time of national reflection, President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk were seen sitting together and shaking hands during the memorial service for Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, ending a highly publicized feud.
The two powerhouses—who have butted heads over fiscal policy and the spending bill signed into law by Trump on July 4—appeared amicable and engaged in quiet conversation during Sunday’s service at State Farm Stadium.
The massive gathering, held in honor of Kirk following his Sept. 10 assassination, offered a poignant backdrop for a potential rapprochement between two of the most influential figures in modern American politics and business.
Video clips from the service captured Trump and Musk leaning in to speak with one another, and at one point, shaking hands as mourners looked on. The footage quickly went viral on social media, with political commentators on both the left and right noting the symbolic weight of the moment.
From Bitter Rivals to Friendly Exchange
Just weeks ago, the idea of Trump and Musk in the same room—let alone sitting side by side—seemed unthinkable.
In June, Musk sharply criticized the $1.9 trillion reconciliation package, warning in a now-viral post on X (formerly Twitter) that it would “balloon the deficit” and floated the idea of launching a third party dedicated to reducing government waste.
“It’s time for a serious discussion about a third party focused on efficiency and fiscal sanity,” Musk wrote on June 30.
Their social media feud escalated throughout the summer, as Trump supporters accused Musk of undermining the administration’s priorities.
Charlie Kirk Called for Reconciliation
One person who saw value in bridging the divide was Charlie Kirk himself.
In a July 1 episode of The Charlie Kirk Show, the conservative firebrand said he hoped Trump and Musk would set aside their differences for the sake of their shared agenda.
“It’s all part of the Trump story. Sometimes things get very heated and then there’s a reconciliation,” Kirk said. “And we all agree that we want Elon Musk and we want Donald Trump to work collaboratively.”
Kirk pointed to Trump’s reconciliation with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis—his former rival during the 2024 GOP primaries—as a template for political healing.
“Donald Trump did not have very good things to say about Ron DeSantis at all. And now they’re taking questions together on the tarmac. In his own words, [Trump] says his relationship with DeSantis is a ‘ten,’” Kirk noted.
DOGE and the Dollars
Musk led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an independent body Trump established by executive order on January 20. Under Musk’s leadership, DOGE identified over $206 billion in government savings, according to its website — a number that translates to $1,279.50 in savings per taxpayer.
Unity in a Moment of Mourning
The emotional event also featured powerful speeches from Trump, administration leaders, and Erika Kirk, Charlie’s widow, who brought the stadium to tears when she forgave her husband’s alleged assassin.
In that spirit of grace, unity, and purpose, even former adversaries appeared willing to put down their swords.
As Erika Kirk put it during her speech, “The answer to hate is not hate… it is love. Always love.”
It seems that message didn’t just move the crowd — it moved two of the country’s most high-profile men to reconcile, if only for a day.
