Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that he threatened to “kick ass” during a heated confrontation last year, while firmly denying reports that he threatened to punch the now-acting Director of National Intelligence “in the face.”

The unusual exchange emerged during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, where Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) pressed Bessent about reports surrounding a confrontation between the two Trump administration officials during the summer of 2025.

According to Bessent, one key detail in the widely circulated account was inaccurate.

Following his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, President Donald Trump said he believes Ukraine can reclaim all territory lost to Russia since the 2022 invasion, with support from NATO, the European Union, and sustained financial backing from European countries.

Trump wrote on social media: “I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form. With time, patience, and the financial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO, the original Borders from where this War started, is very much an option.”

Earlier in the day, Trump said NATO allies should shoot down Russian military aircraft that violate their airspace.

“Yes, I do,” Trump said, when asked if NATO members should take military action against intruding Russian jets.

The remarks came during a meeting with Zelensky at U.N. headquarters following Trump’s address to the General Assembly. The two leaders discussed U.S. support for Ukraine and rising concerns over Russian aerial incursions into NATO territory, particularly in Poland and the Baltic States.

Trump’s tone has shifted sharply from the early days of his second term, when he criticized NATO and leaned toward conciliation with Putin in hopes of ending the war in Ukraine.

Even while striking a tougher tone, Trump repeated his criticism of NATO allies for still buying Russian energy. He stressed that even Ukraine’s closest partners have yet to fully sever ties with Moscow’s oil and gas.

Europe’s reliance on Russian natural gas has declined sharply — from around 45% of gas imports in 2021 to about 18–19% in 2024. However, countries like Hungary and Slovakia remain among the EU member states that continue to import substantial amounts of Russian energy, even as the bloc moves toward reducing dependence.

Meanwhile, fears are mounting in Eastern and Central Europe after a wave of Russian warplane and drone incursions into allied airspace.

On Sept. 19, Russian MiG jets violated Estonian airspace near Vaindloo Island in the Gulf of Finland, staying for roughly 12 minutes without flight plans or active transponders. The breach led Estonia to demand an emergency Article 4 consultation and brought a public warning from NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister Radosław Sikorski issued a sharper response after repeated violations of his country’s airspace, moves that have also led to restricted airspace along its eastern border and broader NATO defense adjustments.

Sweden’s defense minister, Pål Jonson, likewise said Stockholm would shoot down any Russian aircraft that violates Swedish airspace.

Lithuania has approved a new law giving its military the power to shoot down any unauthorized drones crossing its airspace — a sharp expansion of previous rules that limited action to direct threats.

Norway also confirmed three Russian airspace violations, including an Aug. 18 breach by a Su-33 fighter jet — the first in over 10 years.

On Monday night, unidentified drones were reported over Copenhagen. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen blasted it as “the most serious assault on Danish critical infrastructure to date” and a “direct attack” on Denmark.

With the launch of Operation Eastern Sentry on Sept. 12, NATO has sought to underscore its resolve — bolstering the alliance’s eastern flank with stronger air defenses and counter-drone systems in direct response to Moscow’s ongoing provocations.

The Poles need to remember a ‘little’ incident known as the Katyn Forest Massacre……………….
BTW – the land that legally belongs to Ukraine was not ‘taken’ – it was stolen by brute force. NOTE – I’m not saying that the Ukrainians don’t have ‘issues’ that need to be addressed by the world community.

Yes, Zelensky is related to the ones who carried out not only that, but other atrocities. The Russians finally threw them out.
