Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk is backing a growing online movement calling for Americans to cancel their Netflix subscriptions in protest of a transgender character in an animated series for children.
The campaign — led by prominent conservative influencers including Chaya Raichik of Libs of TikTok, Benny Johnson, and others — revolves around the Netflix original series Dead End: Paranormal Park, which features a transgender teenage boy as its lead character.
Though the show was canceled in 2023 after two seasons, it has resurfaced in controversy after posts highlighting its content circulated widely on X (formerly Twitter) — with Musk amplifying them to his nearly 170 million followers.
“Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids,” Musk wrote in a Tuesday post, attaching a cartoon showing Netflix as a Trojan Horse labeled “Transgender Woke Agenda” sneaking into a castle marked “your kids.”
In another reply to a user criticizing the show, Musk added, “This is not okay.”
The Show at the Center of the Controversy
Dead End: Paranormal Park follows a group of teens working in a haunted amusement park, one of whom — Barney — is a transgender boy. The show, created by Hamish Steele, is rated TV-Y7, which is supposed to designate content suitable for children ages 7 and older.
Conservative critics say the show is an example of a broader push by entertainment companies to normalize gender ideology to young audiences.
“Transgender propaganda isn’t just quietly lurking in the background on Netflix,” one user wrote in a post boosted by Musk. “They are actively pushing it on users.” The post linked to a list of shows featured in Netflix’s “Trans Day of Visibility” collection.
Musk responded simply, “Yes,” when asked by another user whether he had canceled his own Netflix subscription.
In a response posted to Bluesky, Dead End creator Hamish Steele acknowledged the wave of attention triggered by Musk’s posts, anticipating “a very odd day.” Steele also said that Netflix is not currently promoting the show.
A Broader Cultural Flashpoint
Musk’s involvement has added fuel to an already charged debate over the role of gender identity in children’s programming. While supporters of trans visibility in media argue that representation fosters understanding and empathy, critics say the inclusion of such topics in shows marketed to children confuses them and has the potential to groom them.
Musk, who has increasingly aligned himself with right-leaning voices on social and cultural issues, has previously criticized woke ideology, particularly in relation to education, race, and gender.
His amplification of this latest campaign mirrors earlier efforts by conservative activists to pressure companies over LGBTQ+ content, including Disney, Target, and Bud Light — many of which faced organized boycotts with varying degrees of financial and reputational impact.
The Bigger Picture
Netflix remains one of the largest entertainment platforms globally, with a growing footprint in original series, movies, documentaries, and live events.
Whether Musk’s campaign will materially affect Netflix’s subscriber base remains to be seen. But the controversy underscores the increasing collision between politics and pop culture — especially when America’s most prominent billionaire is steering the conversation.
