Six House Republicans broke with GOP leadership on Wednesday, joining Democrats to advance legislation that would provide billions of dollars in additional support to Ukraine despite ongoing opposition from President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson.

The House voted 218-204 in favor of a discharge petition that forces consideration of the Ukraine Support Act, a measure that had remained stalled for more than a year after Republican leaders declined to bring it to the floor.

The vote marks one of the most significant bipartisan challenges to Republican leadership on foreign.

PAUL’S DEFENSE BRIEF (PDB) – U.S. forces struck another vessel illegally carrying drugs off the coast of Venezuela, Trump said to thousands of sailors at a ceremony celebrating the U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary. He added that the U.S. would also start looking at drug trafficking happening on land.

The Navy has joined an armed conflict with drug cartels, leading to four strikes in the Caribbean on fast-boats engaged in drug trafficking.

During his speech, Trump said the navy had supported the mission “to blow the cartel terrorists the hell out of the water. There are no boats in the water anymore. You can’t find them.”

With the Trump administration’s counter-narcotics operations in the Caribbean becoming a “non-international armed conflict,” the risks of confrontation between the U.S. military and Venezuela are rising, too.

On top of the counter-narcotics effort, some Trump officials are pushing to oust Venezuela’s illegitimate leader, Nicolás Maduro. (RELATED: Maduro Says US Warships With 1,200 Missiles Targeting Venezuela)

With the possibility of direct actions inland on cartels — now designated as unlawful combatants — becoming a real possibility, it’s worth taking a look at the air defense assets available to Venezuela, which comprise a somewhat unusual mix of older, lower-end equipment and smaller numbers of very capable systems, mainly Russian-supplied.

Almost a third of bosses have reported an increase in cyber-attacks on their supply chains over the past six months, as the fallout from devastating hacks on corporate stalwarts including Jaguar Land Rover highlighted a growing threat to businesses.

DEFENSE POLITICS

The government shutdown is likely to continue into next week after the Senate for a fourth time rejected a bill to keep agencies funded through Nov. 21.

Pentagon issued several memos this week that impose strict fitness and grooming standards and upend the DOD’s processes for reporting discrimination and fraud, waste and abuse.

RUSSIA THREAT

Russia launched drones, missiles and guided aerial bombs across Ukraine in a major nighttime attack that targeted civilian infrastructure.

Russia’s hybrid war against NATO ramping up. While Danish intelligence does not see an immediate threat of a kinetic war, it claims Russia’s growing belligerence has included repeatedly threatening its warships and helicopters in Danish waters.

Germany’s Munich Airport reopened after authorities shut it down the night before for the second time in less than 24 hours after two additional drone sightings.

As Russia’s war in Ukraine raises the possibility of a major deployment on NATO’s eastern flank, France continues to face bureaucratic hurdles that could slow down the rush of troops and tanks to the region, says the French general coordinating military transport.

MIDDLE EAST THREATS

Trump urges mediators to ‘move fast’ as key Gaza peace talks set to begin.

Israel and Hamas prepared for indirect negotiations in Egypt, as hopes for a possible ceasefire in Gaza grew after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said a hostage release could be announced this week.

Israel’s military warned Palestinians that Gaza’s north remains a “combat zone,” telling its residents to move south, after Trump demanded Israel “stop bombing” the enclave when Hamas partially accepted his ceasefire plan.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that an independent Palestinian state is “not even a realistic thing right now.” (RELATED: Kirk’s Final Gift To Israel: A Strategy For Victory In The Information War)

Real space war is being fought in cyberspace. When it comes to warfare in space, many envision lasers, missiles and maybe a nuclear device tucked into orbit. But the head of the National Reconnaissance Office isn’t worried about death rays. He’s worried about hackers.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

Somali government forces successfully ended a six-hour siege by militants at a major prison located near the president’s office in the capital, Mogadishu, killing all seven attackers.

North Darfur displacement has surged in el-Fasher as paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) intensified attacks on North Darfur’s capital.

A coalition of armed movements in Sudan has appointed a ‘civilian government’, but will this legitimize Hemeti and his Rapid Support Forces?

US MILITARY

RTX’ is offering the Air Force and potential future users of Boeing’s F-15EX an enhanced APG-82 radar that promises greater effective range without requiring more power, enabling it to better detect low-observable targets.

A top priority for the U.S. military is to better connect disparate forces so that commanders can make more informed decisions in the fog of war.

I am far less concerned about war with Venezuela than about the drugs coming into the country. At least we finally have someone willing to do what it takes to destroy the cartels afteer endless decades of the “war on drugs” doing nothing significant.
Government shutdowns are nothing more than political theater. Almost always orchestrated by Democrats for their own benefit.
