On September 10th, 31-year-old Turning Point USA Founder, Charlie Kirk was assassinated in horrific, vivid imagery in front of 3,000 students and the world, who unwillingly watched it happen.
So many of us are still struggling with the deep sense of loss, the profound shock and disbelief that something like this could happen in America. Many have taken to social media to find solace, to pay remembrances, to grieve. Scrolling through social media, an unfortunate must as a political writer, I struggle to find any posts speaking about Charlie Kirk’s politics over that of his faith in God. Every post is about Charlie’s faith. How in Charlie’s absence, it leaves us with the inexorable truth that those of us left behind are now called to pick up the microphone and carry on. We are emboldened to the call to take up the armor of God, to speak the truth, to stop being silent, to escape being lukewarm Christians and to be the lions God has called upon each one of us to be.
Charlie’s legacy is the Lord and his unwavering, fearless passion to speak His truth. Politics flows from this place, not the other way around. Faith in God, not government. Believe in Him and good governance will follow. Follow the word of God and goodness will follow. Hate will die alone in the darkness, which cannot overcome the light, the demons will disperse, and fear and confusion becomes faith and certainty. Hopelessness becomes joy, loneliness becomes fellowship and intolerance becomes compassion.
We have been shown all of this and still allow the demons to drag us away from Christ and into the abyss of judgment and hatred toward one another. It’s all around us now more than ever — it sits in the palm of our hands and hangs on our living room walls, and we allow this to drag us further and further away from one another, including away from our own children. Our children are desperate to be filled with joy and hope and instead we watch a 24-hour news cycle while they are filled with filth and degradation. Our children grew up with it, they don’t bat an eye at watching video after video of blood pouring from a young man’s neck being ripped open by an assassin who disagreed with his words. They were words, and questions and prayers for discourse.
We need to bring our children and ourselves out of this darkness and into the light of a world where we are face to face. We need to have conversations with the next generation about how important and detrimental their thoughts are. Not their feelings as much as their thoughts, as thoughts are what lead to feelings. Charlie knew this. He went after it.
Charlie Kirk, in April of this year, referred to the left as “a ticking time bomb” due to their violent reactions and justifications to those with whom they disagreed. The permissiveness allowed by the mainstream media and elected officials of the chaos they have created and the incessant threats they have flung at conservatives, must be called out.
The Network Contagion Research Institute and Rutgers University’s Social Perception Lab’s study showed that amongst liberal respondents, 48.6% approved of Elon Musk’s murder and 55.2% “somewhat” approved of Trump’s murder. Let that sink in. And yet here we are, with the shocked liberal media and leaders of the left not only saying Trump is responsible for Charlie’s assassination, but Charlie is responsible for Charlie’s assassination.
At this point, the liberals should be called the illiberals because that is precisely what they are.
The poll shows that their words have deadly consequences. With no social outrage at the mere thought of such a thing, this was allowed to escalate.
We are at a Turning Point indeed. What we do next is on every one of us. Charlie Kirk’s assassination is a call to action like no other. This brave, purpose driven man chose to use his love for Christ to open a dialogue with our most vulnerable, impressionable, and often hostile, population: college students. He sat alone, willing to debate anyone, a decidedly anti-fascist undertaking. He encouraged our youth to think, to question, to explore and to find the truth behind all the lies they are being force fed. For this he was murdered. It feels now as if no one is safe. This is an attack on free thought, not just free speech.
The call to action must be in the manner in which Charlie lived and for which he died. Dialogue, truth, facts, with face-to-face conversations. We must have the difficult discussions.
Charlie brought young people to the microphone and offered them a seat at the table. He brought the urgency of knowledge and politics to our youth. He did this with God in his heart. He empowered our youth instead of indoctrinating them. He showed young conservatives and Christians that there were others like them, in droves. This is what scares those who would wish violence upon him, those like him or anyone else with whom they disagree. Scares them enough to spew absurd rhetoric at a lost youth with darkness in their hearts leading them to assassinate a powerful and effective dissenting opinion.
Yet this is where we are now, and we must confront this reality head on or perish.
Our politics should stem from our faith in God. There is no room for vitriol, anger and judgement if your politics and your daily actions come from your faith in God. Our country is failing because our faith has been failing. Man is not capable enough to carry the burdens of our sin. That is why Jesus came, lived among us and died for our sins. We must not turn our backs on the truth, ever.
The founders of this nation knew that it would buckle under a Godless people. A government that feeds only itself and its friends, neighbors calling tip lines on neighbors to report they have more than five people in their house for Thanksgiving, hateful, faceless comments about strangers online, taking elementary school kids to drag shows, burning and looting neighborhoods, shooting up schools, churches, movie theaters, grocery stores, child trafficking, literal pornographic novels in middle school libraries, men in women’s locker rooms and competing at NCAA and the Olympic level in women’s sports, a government agency investigating concerned parents and the Catholic Church as domestic terrorists while transgender shooters pick off our children at prayer, the assassination of a young man asking anyone and everyone to have a conversation about all of it. What more proof do you need of a Godless nation? We have long passed the tipping point.
We are called upon to reject the lies, to speak the truth and to meet people where they are. You can’t change a single heart if you are sitting in judgement before the conversation begins or as it is taking place. You cannot change a single thing about the world around you if you are buried in TikTok doom scrolling, posting on Instagram, and surfing Netflix. You cannot change anything at all if you are not out there, face to face with others, engaging, helping people who need you. If you are not still enough to hear your calling and find your purpose, it’s not likely to show up with your next Amazon Prime delivery.
Teddy Roosevelt reminds us that, “credit belongs to the man in the arena.” Do not waste a single day sitting in your chair being a critic; get “dust and sweat and blood” on your face, dare greatly. Get up. Incidentally, that famous speech is titled, “Citizenship in a Republic.”
It was also Teddy Roosevelt who, after being shot by a would-be assassin, instructed his audience not to harm him saying, “Don’t hurt him. Bring him here. I want to see him.” Sounds an awful lot like Charlie and I can envision him doing just that had he been offered that chance. And this begs pity on the poor, lost, dark soul that took his life.
There will be relentless setbacks on this journey to create a free world and defend freedom. Evil will demand it. Charlie showed us a way to fight through it with faith and determination in the quest for truth and freedom. We must keep going. It is our obligation as citizens of a Republic.
I understand now that praying and speaking His name isn’t being on the path. The only path to follow is His and in following that path, all the goodness, peace and glory will come. There is no half measure here. It’s all or nothing. Charlie Kirk brought me to this realization. Thank you, Charlie.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
