A food bank serving federal workers in the Washington, D.C., region ran out of supplies as thousands of families continue to feel the strain of the ongoing government shutdown — now in its 25th day.
The Capital Area Food Bank, which has been organizing emergency food distributions across Virginia, Maryland, and the District, was forced to close early after running out of groceries just over an hour into a drive-through event in northern Virginia. PBS News correspondent Lisa Desjardins reported that a “massive line” of government employees and contractors had formed before dawn, with many waiting for hours for boxes of groceries.
Desjardins wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that a woman she was with teared up after hearing the food bank announced it had run out of items.
Similar scenes unfolded across the D.C. metro area. In Prince George’s County, Maryland, NPR reported that hundreds of “middle-class professionals” — including federal workers and contractors — waited in long lines for basic staples such as pasta, bread, and produce. That site also briefly ran out of food before a second delivery arrived.
“After a two-hour wait, Wanda Bright had finally reached the front of the line — just as the first batch of supplies ran out,” NPR reported. “Fortunately, reinforcements had been called in, and cheers erupted as a second truck backed into the shopping center parking lot.”
Shutdown Enters Fourth Week
Roughly 700,000 federal workers have been furloughed nationwide since the shutdown began more than three weeks ago. The D.C. metropolitan area — home to nearly 20% of the federal workforce — has been particularly hard hit, with many employees missing paychecks and turning to community food programs for help.
One furloughed worker told NBC News that the financial uncertainty has been jarring.
“I’ve not been in this predicament ever. I served 21 years in the military. I’ve been a federal government employee for the past two years,” the worker said. “The reason I wanted to become a federal government employee was stability. That stability, that rug, if you will, has been snatched away from us.”
Political Tensions Deepen
The worsening situation has intensified partisan debate in Washington over the handling of the shutdown. House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA) drew sharp criticism from Republicans this week after comments she made in a Fox News interview were widely interpreted as treating the shutdown as a strategic opportunity.
“Shutdowns are terrible and, of course, there will be families that are going to suffer,” Clark said. “But it is one of the few leverage times we have.”
Clark argued that Democrats have sought to use the standoff to pressure Republicans to meet their healthcare demands.
Republican lawmakers quickly seized on her remarks, accusing Democrats of using federal workers’ livelihoods as political “bargaining chips.”
Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and other top Democrats have resisted GOP proposals for a “clean continuing resolution” to reopen the government.
Human Toll Mounts
As both parties continue to spar in Washington, the human toll of the shutdown continues to grow. Local nonprofits and churches have reported spikes in demand for food, diapers, and utility assistance from furloughed workers and contractors.
Officials with the Capital Area Food Bank said they are working to expand supply and coordinate additional deliveries in the coming days, but warned that resources are being stretched thin.
With no clear path toward reopening the government, community organizations are bracing for a prolonged crisis — and many of the workers they serve are simply running out of options.

This is the cost of the liberal democrats lead by Chuch Schumer and other Democratic leadership for trying to put the bill for medical, food, lodging, and spending money given to the “Illegally crossing our borders and undocumented immigrants” who enter the USA, on the backs of the tax payers. It is nothing but a fraud on the tax payers backs by the Democratic Leadership to help stack the voting deck against the majority of the US citizens and make them pay for the bills to keep these leaders in office with illegal voting. America is waking up to their criminal socialist activity and hopefully will end this period of economic terror against them by leaders who have lost touch with what they are suppose to be doing, instead of self gratification with greed and power. Remember this would not even have been exposed, or the rest of their greed and corruption as well, if Democratic Leadership was in charge of the White House. We can only thank the non-Washington gang member POTUS Trump for exposing and refusing to play their greed and corrupt games which hurt us all.
I feel sorry for the Washington DC based people, but the rest of the nations working stiffs and retired folks are hurting just as or even more than they are. Its time to throw the political criminals to the curb as they no longer represent the US citizens, they represent undocumented and illegal border crossers who were allowed from Obama up through Biden, which have hurt us all, in addition to their own pocket stuffing activities.
One can only hope that these federal employees realize that the free healthcare for ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS is the major sticking point. Once again, why do democrats care more about people that have NEVER contributed anything and are here illegally than they do about American citizens? The bottom line is their policies are no longer working and they need these people to vote. They denied this, however look at how many blue cities these illegals are now allowed those privileges and the mass exodus from their own home countries to countries that afford benefits to their citizens that are paid for BY THOSE VERY SAME CITIZENS.
