Federal authorities are condemning a violent attack on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Chicago on Thursday evening, after a crowd of pro-migrant demonstrators reportedly surrounded and assaulted federal agents with fireworks, rocks, and other projectiles.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the confrontation occurred in the Little Village neighborhood, near 27th Street and Whipple Avenue, as Border Patrol agents and ICE officers were conducting enforcement operations.
A Coordinated Assault
Witness accounts and videos circulating on social media show a large crowd — estimated by DHS to include between 75 and 100 people — encircling law enforcement vehicles and shouting threats at the officers. As agents attempted to move their vehicles, a large box truck reportedly blocked their path, effectively trapping them.
“Rioters then shot at agents with commercial artillery shell fireworks,” DHS said in a statement posted to X (formerly Twitter). “A Border Patrol transport van carrying illegal aliens attempting to get to the safety of the perimeter was then attacked.”
The department said the situation escalated as the crowd grew more aggressive, throwing rocks and debris toward law enforcement. One projectile struck Chief Greg Bovino, a senior Border Patrol official, in the head, DHS confirmed.
DHS: “Law and Order Will Triumph”
DHS said that agents issued repeated warnings to the crowd to disperse before deploying chemical agents to restore order.
“Border Patrol agents repeated multiple warnings to back up and that chemical agents would be deployed if warnings were ignored,” the statement read. “Riot control measures were deployed, including by Chief Bovino, and arrests were made.”
The agency said the response was “conducted in full accordance with CBP policy” and that the use of chemical munitions was “necessary to ensure the safety of both law enforcement and the public.”
“Law and order will triumph in Chicago,” the department added.
Tensions Over Immigration Enforcement
The clash comes amid rising tensions in Chicago and other sanctuary cities as federal immigration operations increase and local protests intensify. Activists have frequently gathered to oppose deportations and criticize the Trump administration’s enforcement efforts, with local officials further straining tensions.
In Chicago, officials have faced pressure from both sides — residents frustrated with resource strain, and advocates demanding protections for undocumented individuals.
Thursday’s violence marks one of the most serious confrontations between federal immigration officers and demonstrators in the city this year.
Ongoing Investigation
DHS said multiple individuals were arrested at the scene, though the number and charges have not been publicly released. The department did not confirm whether any agents were hospitalized.
Chicago police and federal authorities are jointly investigating the incident. City officials have not yet issued an official statement.

the best Mayor and most effective one that Chicago ever had, Mayor Daley the first, would have been busting heads and throwing this unruly crowd into paddy wagons and carting them off to jail in a not too gentle way. He would be rolling over in his grave today if he knew what has happend to his city. He had Chicago working like a well oiled machine and you felt safe no matter where you were. Passing laws like having face covering should be illegal when protesting. This would eliminate a lot of the problems with these paid protestors. The left. Is demanding that ICE personnel cannot cover their faces so as to allow them to easily dox them and their families, however they also cowardly do not want to be exposed.
