President Donald Trump made a surprise appearance in the Fox Sports broadcast booth Sunday night, taking over commentary duties during the Washington Commanders’ “Salute to Service” game against the Detroit Lions — just days before Veterans Day.
Trump, who attended the game as part of a tribute to U.S. service members, joined the booth midway through the matchup and quickly launched into play-by-play analysis — and a bit of football nostalgia.
“I will say that your second string, your backup quarterback, is a good quarterback, and he’s had some very good games for you,” Trump said during the live broadcast. “Your first string quarterback has the potential, I think, to be a great quarterback — he’s got to stop the injuries somehow.”
As the Commanders drove into the Red Zone, Trump heightened the drama in typical fashion.
“This is a very big play, don’t you think?” he asked the Fox commentators. “I think they have to get a touchdown. Let’s put it differently — they have to get a touchdown.”
Trump Recounts His Football Career
Fox Sports hosts Kenny Albert and Jonathan Vilma took the opportunity to ask Trump about his personal connection to football, revealing that they had dug up his high school stats.
“You go way back with the sport of football,” Albert said. “You played at New York Military Academy. How old were you when you started, and what were some of the life lessons you took out of it?”
Trump smiled as the broadcast cut to an archival photo of him in uniform.
“We had a quarterback who didn’t have a very strong arm — I would say 10 yards was a long pass,” Trump recalled. “We had a good time, and I loved it. I actually loved playing football.”
Possible Stadium Naming Deal in the Works
Trump’s return to the gridiron spotlight comes amid reports that the White House and the Washington Commanders have been in backchannel discussions about naming the team’s new stadium after the president.
According to ESPN, Trump played a key role in facilitating funding for the team’s planned stadium redevelopment, and the idea of naming rights has been floated as part of the deal.
“That would surely be a beautiful name,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told CNN. “It was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible.”
The president has also repeatedly expressed interest in seeing the team restore its original “Redskins” name, which was retired in 2020 following years of controversy.
A Pop Culture Crossover Moment
Trump’s broadcast appearance quickly went viral, with clips circulating across X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube. Supporters hailed the moment as a lighthearted return to form for the president, while critics accused Fox Sports of politicizing a primetime NFL game.
Still, the segment marked another instance of Trump’s unconventional media strategy and ability to generate new headlines.
