ATLANTA — A top Georgia legal official is taking the reins of the state’s racketeering case against President Donald Trump, following the disqualification of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis over misconduct concerns.
Pete Skandalakis, executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia (PAC) and a longtime prosecutor, confirmed he will personally assume responsibility for the case. His announcement comes after a court ordered PAC to appoint a new prosecutor by Friday, Nov. 14, or risk the charges being dropped without prejudice.
Willis was removed from the case after a judge ruled that her romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade created an appearance of impropriety, undermining the integrity of the proceedings.
The case, filed in August 2023 under Georgia’s RICO law, accused Trump and 18 others of attempting to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. With Willis off the case, progress stalled, and the prosecution entered legal limbo. Skandalakis’ decision revives the effort — at least procedurally — but major questions remain about the scope and direction of the case going forward.
It’s unclear whether Skandalakis will pursue the full slate of racketeering charges or consider narrowing, settling, or dismissing portions of the indictment. Trump is unlikely to face trial while in office, but 14 co-defendants — including former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani — could still see the case move forward.
Trump’s power to pardon applies only to federal offenses, meaning any convictions under Georgia law would remain unaffected.
