In pursuit of his unending need to be a contrarian “conservative” jack*ss, Tucker Carlson now insulted a whole lot of Christians who revere Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Lutheran pastor during World War II who was imprisoned, and later killed, for helping Jewish Germans escape to Switzerland.
His hanging by the Nazis in 1945 at a concentration camp in Bavaria made him one of Christianity’s most revered martyrs of the 20th century.
But to Carlson, even this Christian icon must be defamed as an advocate for murder and brought down.
According to Carlson, Bonhoeffer, a founding member of the Christian resistance movement known as the Confessing, advocated murder for wanting Adolf Hitler dead, and by being linked to the Nazi resistance circle behind the failed plot to assassinate Hitler in July 1944.
“To be Dietrich Bonhoeffer and sort of reach the end of reason, or even Christianity … Bonhoeffer decided Christianity’s not even — he was a Lutheran pastor — Christianity is not enough, we have to kill the guy [Hitler],” Carlson said.
Carlson’s framing of Bonhoeffer as someone who “advocated murder” stunned Christian leaders, historians, and politicians.
Conservative GOP Senator Ted Cruz was taken aback by Carlson’s idiotic rant, writing on X:
Wow. Stunning.
Who in their right mind would side with Adolph Hitler over Bonhoeffer?
Not only that, but Carlson is also wrong in his argument.
As noted by Newsmax, conservative-leaning author “Eric Metaxas, whose best-selling biography ‘Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy’ helped introduce the theologian to millions of American Christians, blasted Carlson’s comments as historically and theologically illiterate.”
“Tucker’s statements about Bonhoeffer are WRONG,” Metaxas wrote on X.
It’s seriously shocking he would say these things. Bonhoeffer did not advocate MURDER, which would have been sinful, but he did understand that within a just war people are KILLED. Will Tucker now condemn David for killing Goliath?
In another post on X, Metaxes made the clear distinction all traditional Christianity makes:
…let’s be clear. Not all killing is MURDER.
David did not MURDER Goliath. MURDER is always wrong.
The point he makes is that killing is a word for homicide. It can be either unjustified, murder, or justified, as in self-defense. This can be seen on a personal level or a national level, as the Catholic “Just War” doctrine allows for killing in war if certain conditions are met.
Metaxas noted that Bonhoeffer’s involvement with anti-Hitler resistance was deeply rooted in Christian ethics rather than a rejection of them.
“In my BONHOEFFER book I detail the ethical struggle he had in participating in the plot to kill Hitler,” he wrote in another post.
Metaxas urged Carlson to stop engaging in the topic as clickbait, instead approaching it sincerely.
“I wish @TuckerCarlson would have me on for an honest conversation about Bonhoeffer,” he wrote in a post. “He is TOTALLY off base in saying what he says and I’m just shocked he would say it. Like WOW…”
Later, Metaxes added in another post, “I am seriously SHOCKED [that] Tucker would say such wildly uninformed things about BONHOEFFER.”
Don’t be too shocked, Carslon has made it his new schtick to say outrageous things, either because he has gone down too many bizarre rabbit holes and believes them, or simply because it is his way to stay in the public eye.
Either way, to many conservatives, Tucker Carlson is becoming less serious and less relevant every day.

Tucker Carlson has gone completely off the rails. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a hero, in fact, a martyr. The entire allied powers (that includes us) was trying to kill Hitler and his evil for all the best of reasons.
To say I AM SHOCKED by Mr., Tucker’s attack against Mr. Bonhoeffer would be an understatement. HITLER WAS PURE EVIL and PURE EVIL STOPS AT NOTHING TO REACH ITS GOAL and HITLER ALMOST SUCCEEDED IN ERASING THE JEWISH PEOPLE and OTHERS HE DEEMED WAS UNFIT TO LIVE. THANKFULLY, HE STOPPED HIMSELF BY COMMITTING SUICIDE BECAUSE HE KNEW WHAT AWAITED HIM and THE COWARD HE WAS, I WOULD RATHER HAVE SEEN THE WORLD DEAL WITH THAT EVIL MONSTER. THERE IS TO ME NOTHING WRONG WITH WANTING THAT KIND OF EVIL DESTROYED.
