Patel has come under scrutiny for his stewardship of bureau resources, including his girlfriend’s security detail and use of a government jet, and for his squabbles with other Trump loyalists.
Trump and White House aides have confided to allies that the president is eyeing removing Patel and is considering top FBI official Andrew Bailey as the bureau’s new director, according to the three people.
Patel is described as being on thin ice and his ouster appears closer than ever, with Bailey as the logical replacement, two of the sources with knowledge of the situation said, though Trump could change his mind in the weeks to come.
The report immediately drew a response from the White House.
White House Pushes Back
White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told MS Now that Trump “has assembled the most talented and impressive administration in history and they are doing an excellent job carrying out the President’s agenda.”
She added that Patel remains “a critical member of the President’s team” and is “working tirelessly to restore integrity to the FBI.”
Press secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed the pushback on X, criticizing the outlet’s reporting.
Criticism From the Right
Despite the administration’s defense, several prominent conservative accounts on social media renewed calls for Patel’s dismissal.
Their criticism centered on allegations that Patel misused a $60 million FBI jet and taxpayer-funded SWAT protection for his girlfriend, who does not live with him. Those complaints come amid broader scrutiny of Patel’s leadership.
Controversies Fuel Further Scrutiny
Patel has also come under fire on the right for how he oversaw the manhunt for the suspect in conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s killing — and for his handling of the so-called Jeffrey Epstein files, multiple flashpoint that continues to fuel frustration among grassroots activists.
Shortly after Charlie Kirk’s assassination, Patel posted on X that the “subject … is now in custody.” The statement proved premature. Within 90 minutes, the individual Patel identified as the suspect had been released.
At a later press conference announcing the actual suspect’s apprehension, Patel ended his remarks with, “See you in Valhalla,” a comment directed at Kirk, a devout Christian. The comment sparked a wave of outrage, with critics calling it tone-deaf, bizarre, and wildly unprofessional.
Balancing Achievements and Doubts
While Patel has earned some credit for moving the bureau forward, critics argue that his day-to-day decision-making, communication, and perceived ethical inconsistencies continue to raise concerns.
Whether Trump ultimately decides to keep or replace him remains an open question heading into the months ahead.
