Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.

According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.

The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.

RUSSIA THREAT

Ukraine aims to amass ‘million-strong army’ to recapture south, says defense minister. Ukraine plans a “million-strong army” equipped with NATO weapons to retake the south of the country from occupying Russians, the defense minister says.

US to send more HIMARS precision rockets to Ukraine. The United States is sending to Ukraine up to $400 million in additional military equipment and supplies, including four more medium-range rocket systems and ammunition, as the embattled nation tries to repel Russia’s advances in the Donbas region.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 138. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said there had been no let-up in Russian attacks on his country, with 34 air raids conducted in the past 24 hours, including strikes that killed at least 15 people in the Donetsk town of Chasiv Yar.

Ukraine hit by widespread Russian shelling, apartment toll rises to 18. Russia opened fire with artillery, multiple rocket launchers and tanks around Ukraine’s second largest city Kharkiv and shelled cities in the east, Ukraine’s general staff said on Monday, after a strike that killed 18 people in an apartment building.

NATIONAL SECURITY

Defense firm said US spies backed its bid for Pegasus spyware maker. The American contractor L3 Harris is said to have cited support from intelligence officials for its effort to acquire NSO, the Israeli spyware company blacklisted by the Biden administration.

HOMELAND SECURITY

‘Trump girl’: West Virginia Air Guard member admits role in Capitol riot. A West Virginia guardsmen who wore a hoodie that read “Yes, I’m a Trump girl” inside the U.S. Capitol Rotunda during the Jan. 6 riot has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor.

CHINA THREAT

China demands end to US-Taiwan military ‘collusion.’ China has demanded the U.S. cease military “collusion” with Taiwan during a virtual meeting between the joint chiefs of staff from the two countries whose relationship has grown increasingly fractious.

Strict oversight needed for new US-backed counter-China infrastructure initiative. The United States, in partnership with other Group of 7 (G7) nations, launched an initiative last week aimed at raising $600 billion to fund infrastructure projects in low- and middle-income countries over the next five years. While President Joe Biden hailed the program as an alternative to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the White House has released scant details about how Washington will fund or monitor the projects, raising important questions for Congress as it seeks to counter China’s overseas influence responsibly.

IRAN THREAT

Hezbollah drones target Israeli gas rigs, amplify US pressure on Israel. The Israeli military last week shot down three unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah had launched toward one of Israel’s offshore rigs at the Karish gas field. The purpose of the attack was to pressure Israel into concluding an agreement to delineate its maritime border with Lebanon, thus enabling Beirut to tap its potential offshore natural gas reserves.

NORTH KOREA THREAT

South Korea detects shots apparently launched by North Korea. South Korea’s military said on Sunday it had detected the trajectories of what appeared to be shots fired by North Korea, possibly from multiple rocket launchers (MLRs).

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

US weighs possible resumption of offensive arms sales to Saudis. The Biden administration is discussing the possible lifting of its ban on U.S. sales of offensive weapons to Saudi Arabia, but any final decision is expected to hinge on whether Riyadh makes progress toward ending the war in neighboring Yemen, according to four people familiar with the matter.

BIDEN’S AFGHAN DISASTER

1 year later, Biden administration braces for spotlight on chaotic Afghanistan exit. White House aides hope to mitigate further political damage from a moment that will remind Americans of an effort many of them consider one of Biden’s biggest failures.

US MILITARY AND SPACE

Gutting cannon artillery in the Marine Corps’ new fighting plan is a huge mistake. Cannon artillery is “the only all-weather, immediately on call and sustainable fire support available to maneuver forces in ‘every clime and place.'”

Retired general suspended after tweet critical of Jill Biden. A retired three-star Army general has been suspended from his duties as an adviser to active-duty officers, an Army spokeswoman said Saturday. The suspension followed reports that his social media account carried a comment critical of first lady Jill Biden.
