He’s down, but he’s not out…
On Monday, former Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) announced he is ending his bid for Texas Senate and instead opting to run for Texas’s new 33th Congressional District as progressive Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) is widely anticipated to launch a bid for Sen. John Cornyn’s (R-Texas) seat.
“In the past few days, I’ve come to believe that a bruising Senate Democratic primary and runoff would prevent the Democratic Party from going into this critical election unified against the danger posed to our communities and our Constitution by Donald Trump and one of his Republican bootlickers [Texas Attorney General Ken] Paxton, Cornyn, or [Rep. Wesley] Hunt,” Allred said in a statement posted to X.
I am deeply moved by the personal stories and trust that so many Texans have placed in me. I'm forever grateful and believe it comes with heavy responsibility.

“That’s why I’ve made the difficult decision to end my campaign for the U.S. Senate,” he added, while later announcing his run for the Dallas-area 33th Congressional District.
Allred, who jumped into the race in July, ran last cycle against Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) but lost by nearly 9 points.
Meanwhile, Cornyn is fighting for his political life in the Republican primary against Paxton and Hunt. President Trump has not weighed in on the primary, though it’s likely it will head into a runoff. Candidates need to win at least half the vote in the primary to avoid a runoff between the two top vote-getters.
The nonpartisan election handicapper Cook Political Report rates Cornyn’s seat as “likely Republican.”
Over the weekend, Crockett told CNN that she’s made out two cashier checks, one if she jumps into the Senate campaign and one to submit if she files for re-election in the House.
Fox News reported that Crackett’s down-to-the-wire announcement is scheduled for 90 minutes before the final deadline to submit one of the checks.
Crockett has signaled her Senate plans for weeks now, telling MS NOW on Sunday that “I am closer to yes than I am to no.” And she has said she’s commissioned polling to make her case for a Senate run in Texas, where no Democrat has won a statewide election in over three decades.
In another sign that she’s expected to launch a Senate run, Crockett told the Dallas Morning News that she called both Allred and Talarico to discuss her polling.
Monday’s filing deadline comes just a few days after the Supreme Court upheld a new congressional map passed by the GOP-dominated Texas legislature and signed into law by longtime Republican Gov. Greg Abbott that creates five more right-leaning House districts in the Lone Star State. (RELATED: Supreme Court Clears Texas To Use GOP-Friendly Map In 2026)
