Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that he threatened to “kick ass” during a heated confrontation last year, while firmly denying reports that he threatened to punch the now-acting Director of National Intelligence “in the face.”

The unusual exchange emerged during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, where Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) pressed Bessent about reports surrounding a confrontation between the two Trump administration officials during the summer of 2025.

According to Bessent, one key detail in the widely circulated account was inaccurate.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Authorities said Tuesday they still have no confirmed identity for the gunman who opened fire at Brown University over the weekend, killing two students and wounding nine others, even as FBI Director Kash Patel drew criticism for a podcast appearance that aired during the ongoing search.

Providence police released a new video timeline and a slightly clearer image of the suspect, but said the footage still does not show the man’s face. Investigators described the suspect as stocky, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, with his face masked or turned away in the video made public so far.

Police said the updated timeline includes footage from before the shooting that shows the suspect walking through nearby residential streets. Investigators believe he may have been casing the area. Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez urged residents and business owners to review home and security camera footage for anything that could help identify the suspect.

The shooting occurred Saturday inside an engineering building during finals season. In response, Brown University officials canceled all remaining in-person classes, exams, and papers for the semester.

Law enforcement agencies have opened a public tip portal and are offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to an arrest. (RELATED: Family Of Republican Club VP Killed In Brown Shooting Told She Was Specifically Targeted: Report)

Patel’s appearance on “The Katie Miller Podcast” (Episode 19, titled “FBI Director Kash Patel & Alexis Wilkins”) landed the same day investigators emphasized that the suspect remained unidentified and at large.

A teaser clip from the episode was posted to social media by Katie Miller on Monday evening while law enforcement was actively searching for the suspect.

Miller later clarified that the interview had been recorded before the shooting occurred.

Despite that explanation, both Miller and Patel faced widespread criticism over what many described as the “terrible optics” of releasing a “softball” interview centered on a “love story” amid an active manhunt for a mass shooting suspect. Critics argued the timing reflected poor judgment and misplaced priorities.

Patel said during the episode that it was “ironic” he has been criticized over allegations that he used taxpayer-funded travel to attend his girlfriend’s country music performances.

Patel argued that if he were “abusing it,” he would attend all of her shows — not just the roughly “15%” he said he has made it to. (RELATED: FBI Director Kash Patel Sues MSNBC Analyst Over Nightclub Hopping Allegation)

Over the weekend, Patel publicly announced that a person of interest had been detained. That individual was later released after investigators determined there was insufficient evidence, according to reports.

Patel became the FBI’s ninth director in February 2025.
