When officers arrived, they found the suspect along the side of the house. The suspect opened fire, striking two officers at close range. One officer was hit multiple times, but his ballistic vest prevented critical injuries, according to police. The second officer was shot in the upper body and, as of Saturday morning, was listed in critical but stable condition.
The man who called the police was also shot several times by the suspect.
The suspect then ran from the scene and was later approached by another officer. The suspect shot that officer in the upper body.
Officers returned fire and killed the suspect.
At Saturday’s news conference, Rochester Police Chief David Smith described the attack as a grim reminder of the dangers that law enforcement faces. “Saying you’re going to go out and risk your life is an easy thing to do,” Smith said, adding that actually doing it “is a completely different level of dedication.”
Mayor Malik Evans, speaking after the shooting, called it a nightmare and asked the community to pray for the wounded officers.
