Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat who was reelected in 2024 to a fourth six-year term in the U.S. Senate, is facing growing pressure from within her home state to consider a run for governor, multiple sources confirmed to Fox News Digital.
Sources also told FOX 9 in Minnesota that Klobuchar is actively considering a gubernatorial bid, though no final decision has been made.
The development comes after Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz announced he would not seek reelection, a move that followed mounting criticism over his handling of a massive welfare assistance fraud scandal that has shaken a state long known for its reputation for clean governance.
Walz met with Klobuchar on Sunday to discuss his decision to withdraw from the race, according to a source familiar with the meeting who spoke to Fox News.
Klobuchar declined to address her own political future in a statement issued Monday. Instead, she commented on Walz’s decision to abandon his reelection campaign, saying, “Walz made the difficult decision to focus on his job and the challenges facing our state rather than campaigning and running for reelection.”
Walz, the 2024 Democratic vice presidential nominee, formally launched his bid for a third four-year term as governor in September. However, in recent weeks, he has faced intensifying scrutiny from Republicans, President Donald Trump, and even some Democrats over the large-scale theft tied to Minnesota’s welfare programs.
In a statement announcing his withdrawal, Walz said he was unable to balance campaigning with addressing the crisis.
“As I reflected on this moment with my family and my team over the holidays, I came to the conclusion that I can’t give a political campaign my all,” Walz wrote. “Every minute I spend defending my own political interests would be a minute I can’t spend defending the people of Minnesota against the criminals who prey on our generosity and the cynics who prey on our differences.”
“So I’ve decided to step out of this race and let others worry about the election while I focus on the work in front of me for the next year,” the governor added in his statement and during brief remarks to reporters. Walz did not take questions at the time but said he would return Tuesday to “take all your questions.”

Klobuchar, meanwhile, has won each of her four Senate elections by comfortable margins, including a nearly 16-point victory in her 2024 reelection race. She currently holds the No. 3 position in Senate Democratic leadership.
Despite her seniority, party insiders note that her path to higher leadership posts in the Senate remains limited, raising questions about whether a gubernatorial run could offer a more viable next step in her political career as Minnesota Democrats prepare for a wide-open race.
