Scott Adams, the American cartoonist best known for creating the long-running comic strip Dilbert, has died at age 68 following a battle with metastatic prostate cancer.
His death was confirmed Tuesday morning. Adams’ ex-wife announced his passing during a livestream of his podcast.
Adams launched Dilbert in 1989, transforming it into one of the most widely recognized workplace satires in popular culture. At its peak, the comic was syndicated in thousands of newspapers worldwide and inspired books, merchandise, and a short-lived television adaptation.
In recent months, Adams had spoken publicly about his diagnosis, revealing that his prostate cancer had spread to his bones and that his prognosis was grim.
While Dilbert earned praise for its sharp critique of office culture and managerial dysfunction, Adams became an increasingly polarizing figure in later years due to controversial political commentary. In 2023, many newspapers and syndicates dropped the comic following backlash over his remarks.
Despite losing mainstream syndication, Adams continued to publish Dilbert online and remained active through his podcast and social media platforms.
