Former President Barack Obama is urging Americans to “support and draw inspiration” from the movement in Minneapolis that has targeted federal immigration enforcement and coincided with deadly violence, including the deaths of two American citizens.
“Every American should support and draw inspiration from the wave of peaceful protests in Minneapolis,” Obama wrote in a statement released Sunday, framing the demonstrations as a “moral response” to what he described as “unchecked federal power.”
The statement followed a volatile weekend in Minneapolis marked by riots, clashes with federal agents, and the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti during a federal enforcement operation. Pretti’s death came just weeks after another federal agent–involved killing in the city, further inflaming tensions between federal authorities and Democratic state and local leaders.
Casting Protests as Resistance
Obama opened his statement calling Pretti’s death a “heartbreaking tragedy” and a “wake-up call” for the nation. He argued that recent federal immigration operations represent a departure from accountable law enforcement and accused agents of acting in ways that undermine public trust.
“Federal law enforcement and immigration agents have a tough job,” Obama wrote, “but Americans expect them to carry out their duties in a lawful, accountable way, and to work with, rather than against, state and local officials to ensure public safety.”
According to Obama, that expectation has not been met in Minnesota. Instead, he claimed federal agents have engaged in tactics designed to “intimidate, harass, provoke, and endanger” residents—language that mirrors talking points long advanced by far-left activist groups.
Three paragraphs into the statement, Obama’s rhetoric shifted from critique to endorsement of mass resistance. He echoed arguments made by Antifa-aligned activists and progressive organizers who have attempted to obstruct federal immigration enforcement through coordinated street actions, protests, and physical blockades.
Blaming Federal Escalation
Obama placed responsibility for the violence squarely on the Trump administration, accusing the president and his officials of escalating tensions while defending the shootings of Pretti and Renee Good without what he characterized as serious investigation.
“These are unprecedented tactics,” Obama wrote, claiming they have now “resulted in the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens.”
He urged the administration to abandon its current enforcement strategy and instead defer to Democratic Minnesota officials, including Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, both of whom have publicly opposed cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
“This has to stop,” Obama wrote. “Administration officials should reconsider their approach and start finding ways to work constructively with Governor Walz and Mayor Frey … to avert more chaos.”
Both officials, however, are facing scrutiny over their handling of large-scale welfare fraud in the state, which federal authorities say prompted the expanded enforcement effort.
A Call for Nationwide Emulation
Obama concluded by encouraging Americans across the country to follow Minneapolis’ example, framing the protests as a civic obligation rather than a localized response.
“In the meantime,” he wrote, “every American should support and draw inspiration from the wave of peaceful protests in Minneapolis and other parts of the country.”
Though couched in passive language, critics argue the statement amounts to a call for nationwide resistance to the enforcement of federal immigration laws—laws that Trump ran on enforcing and which many argue he has a democratic mandate to uphold.
The administration has pointed to falling crime rates, rising wages, declining inflation, and easing housing pressures as evidence that stricter enforcement has benefited American workers after four years of mass migration under the Biden administration.
Competing Visions of the Country
Obama’s remarks reflect a deeper ideological divide over immigration and national identity. During an October appearance, he again framed large-scale migration as a test of whether democracy can survive deep cultural and demographic change—a view he said was shared by past Republican leaders including George W. Bush, John McCain, and Mitt Romney.
Critics argue that this vision treats American society as an experiment rather than a stable nation with enforceable laws, and that encouraging street-level resistance against federal authorities risks normalizing chaos and political violence.

Remember back in 2008 when this communist said “in 5 days we’re going to fundamentally change America?” He’s still pushing that transformation, a transformation that will destroy the country while he’s made over $100 million since then.
This Pretend ex-President has ever taken responsibility for anything in his Life. Just ask his wife. Instead he prances and preens before any available microphone to spread his contempt for anything American. Just what his MIA Commie Father always wanted for him.
Obama has personally done more to destroy America then all of OUR foreign adversaries. —NOT saying that he doesn’t coordinate with them— but as he said “he wanted to fundamentally change America” he has and NOT FOR THE BETTER.
The actions in Minneapolis are NOT peaceful protesting. This is CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY to OBSTRUCT FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT!. Everyone participating should be arrested and jailed, just like what happened for J6. This is socialism/communism being capitulated at very organized levels to overthrow US Citizens will, voted for in the 2024 elections. The DOJ and Congress needs to build charges and get to work!!
