New details emerged Tuesday in the search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie — the mother of “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie — after the Los Angeles Times reported that authorities found blood inside her Arizona home along with signs of forced entry.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has declared the residence in Tucson a crime scene, with investigators treating Guthrie’s disappearance as a likely criminal matter.
Investigators discovered bloodstains and evidence of a break-in, though officials have not publicly confirmed whose blood was found as DNA testing continues.
Authorities believe Guthrie may have been taken from the home overnight, citing her limited mobility and need for daily medication.
Her car and cellphone were found at the residence, suggesting she did not leave voluntarily, law enforcement sources said.
“At this point, investigators believe she was taken from the home against her will, possibly [in the] middle of the night,” Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Kevin Adger told the Times.
During a press conference Monday, Sheriff Chris Nanos stressed the urgency of the search, warning that missing medication could pose serious health risks.
“She needs her daily medication,” Nanos said. “And anybody that sees anything that even looks, ‘Hey, maybe that’s her,’ just take a quick picture. Take a video, send it to us.”
A reward has been offered, and authorities are urging anyone with information — including photos or surveillance footage from the area — to contact law enforcement.
In an Instagram post Monday night, Savannah Guthrie asked followers to keep her family in their prayers.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home near Tucson on the evening of Jan. 31 and was reported missing the following day after failing to attend a planned church service. The investigation now involves local, state, and federal agencies.
