William “Bill” Stevenson, 77, who was previously married to First Lady Jill Biden from 1970 until their divorce in 1975, has been formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his current wife, Linda Stevenson.
Stevenson was indicted on a first-degree murder charge and taken into custody without incident Monday by the New Castle County Police Department in Delaware.
Linda Stevenson, 64, was found unresponsive inside the couple’s Delaware home after police responded to a reported domestic dispute on Dec. 28, 2025. Officers attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Stevenson is being held on $500,000 bail and has been arraigned on the murder charge.
Stevenson was married to Jill Biden while she was a college student; they divorced in 1975, years before she married then-Sen. Joe Biden in 1977.
Police dispatch audio referenced a possible cardiac arrest the night of the incident. Linda Stevenson’s body was turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science, which conducted an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death.
Before Monday’s arrest, law enforcement described the December incident as a death investigation tied to a domestic dispute. A 911 call was placed from the home prior to police arrival.
Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed the official cause and manner of Linda Stevenson’s death, whether a weapon was involved, or any potential motive.
Stevenson previously owned the Stone Balloon, a popular bar near the University of Delaware.
