Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that he threatened to “kick ass” during a heated confrontation last year, while firmly denying reports that he threatened to punch the now-acting Director of National Intelligence “in the face.”

The unusual exchange emerged during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, where Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) pressed Bessent about reports surrounding a confrontation between the two Trump administration officials during the summer of 2025.

According to Bessent, one key detail in the widely circulated account was inaccurate.

While he denied threatening.

PAUL’S DEFENSE BRIEF (PDB)CNO “all ahead flank” on AI. The Navy’s ambitious vision to enable the Golden Fleet of heavily armed, high-tech manned warships accompanied by a vast network of nimble unmanned and autonomous platforms hinges on AI.

Buoyed by billions in investments into robotic systems, the Navy is considering how it will command and manage swarms of unmanned surface, subsurface, and aerial drones throughout the fleet.

Lockheed unveiled its Lamprey Multi-Mission Autonomous Undersea Vehicle, an unmanned underwater vehicle that can attach itself to ships, launch torpedoes, and deploy airborne drones.

Army opens new Fort Benning class to help leaders use drones and robots in combat.

The Army is writing the book on using small drones in a tank formation. As the Army’s Transformation-in-Contact brigades test and help develop new technology, they’re also shaping how soldiers will be trained to use it.

Buzz is building in the Army’s weapons arsenal on the heels of a $5.2 million deal for drone-bashing Bumblebee, a real stinger of a knockout force.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY – Here’s a roundup of today’s other top defense news from conservative national security expert PAUL CRESPO.

THE PDB – Not the President’s Daily Briefing, but almost as good – PAUL’S DEFENSE BRIEF:

HOMELAND DEFENSE

The military is taking formal control of more of the Texas borderland. Nearly 200 more miles of the U.S. border with Mexico have been placed under Air Force supervision, enabling wider use of military force and heftier charges against people crossing illegally into the country.

About 137,000 powerful .50-caliber rounds have been seized in Mexico since 2012, headed for the cartels. 47% came from a U.S. Army plant in Kansas City, Mo.

Biodefense blind spot: Washington confuses pandemics with bioweapons. The next great biological threat may not begin in a wet market, jungle, or lab accident. It may begin on a laptop with a commercially available AI model.

DEFENSE POLITICS

Marine Corps passed its third clean financial audit, the only service to do so thus far. The service is also testing multiple AI and automation pilots to make the process easier.

US POWER OVERSEAS

The U.S. is sending 200 troops to Nigeria to train the country’s military to fight Islamist terrorists, weeks after Trump accused the West African government of failing to protect Christians from terrorist attacks.

GREENLAND CRISIS

Counterpoint. Why Greenland’s takeover is not needed for the Golden Dome. One of President Trump’s stated reasons for why he wants the U.S. to own Greenland is increasingly gaining traction: the U.S. needs to acquire Greenland to protect itself against missile attacks.

IRAN THREAT

F-35A stealth fighters from the Vermont Air National Guard are edging nearer to the Middle East. The movement of these aircraft comes as the U.S. is building up a large force in the region ahead of a possible conflict with Iran.

MIDDLE EAST THREATS

Does guaranteeing Israel’s qualitative military edge still serve U.S. interests? Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed he sought to “taper off” the $3.8 billion annual U.S. military aid or even end this longstanding military assistance program entirely, due to the leverage it gives the U.S. over Israel.

Syria post-Assad. President Ahmed al-Sharaa has impressed many Syrians and foreign observers with his pragmatism and ability to stabilize the country. However, the path to peace has not been smooth.

CHINA THREAT

Chinese carrier-based fighter seen equipped with new supersonic anti-ship missile. The mainstay of Chinese carrier air wings was seen with missiles potentially capable of striking targets more than 1,000 km away at supersonic speeds.

China “just not there yet” on H-20 stealth bomber. Head of U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command downplayed the significance of Chinese efforts to develop new long-range strike aircraft with more global reach. He said China still remains, at best, a regional bomber force.

RUSSIA THREAT/UKRAINE WAR

Russia’s Grinding War in Ukraine. As the conflict in Ukraine nears the four-year mark, human casualties have reached staggering levels, with combined Russian and Ukrainian losses approaching two million. Ukrainian equipment losses. The two sides have also lost a confirmed combined total of 28,000 weapon platforms, though real numbers may be much higher. Russian equipment losses.

Russian stealth jets have arrived in North Africa, as filmed by an Algerian farmer. Algeria is the first country to receive the fifth-generation Su-57 stealth fighter.

EUROPEAN DEFENSE BUILDUP

German startup Hypersonica claimed a “significant” step toward delivering Europe’s first sovereign hypersonic strike capability by 2029, after the company’s test flight pushed its missile prototype to more than Mach 6 and a range of more than 300 km.

Erdogan pitches KAAN fighter jet as alternative to Western warplanes. Turkish President visited Saudi Arabia and Egypt earlier this month, marking fresh steps in the normalization of relations with key regional powers and opening the door to new defense deals.

US MILITARY

The military’s top EOD technology authority recently warned bomb technicians against uploading restricted technical material into generative AI systems — including Pentagon-approved platforms and commercial offerings.

“Hangar queens”: Congressional hearing reveals Osprey tiltrotor readiness rates declining as mishaps increase. This, as Navy and Marine Corps officials touted progress in overcoming the fatal V-22 Osprey gearbox issue that has limited operations since 2023.
