About 137,000 powerful .50-caliber rounds have been seized in Mexico since 2012, headed for the cartels. 47% came from a U.S. Army plant in Kansas City, Mo.
Biodefense blind spot: Washington confuses pandemics with bioweapons. The next great biological threat may not begin in a wet market, jungle, or lab accident. It may begin on a laptop with a commercially available AI model.
DEFENSE POLITICS
Marine Corps passed its third clean financial audit, the only service to do so thus far. The service is also testing multiple AI and automation pilots to make the process easier.
US POWER OVERSEAS
The U.S. is sending 200 troops to Nigeria to train the country’s military to fight Islamist terrorists, weeks after Trump accused the West African government of failing to protect Christians from terrorist attacks.
GREENLAND CRISIS
Counterpoint. Why Greenland’s takeover is not needed for the Golden Dome. One of President Trump’s stated reasons for why he wants the U.S. to own Greenland is increasingly gaining traction: the U.S. needs to acquire Greenland to protect itself against missile attacks.
IRAN THREAT
F-35A stealth fighters from the Vermont Air National Guard are edging nearer to the Middle East. The movement of these aircraft comes as the U.S. is building up a large force in the region ahead of a possible conflict with Iran.
MIDDLE EAST THREATS
Does guaranteeing Israel’s qualitative military edge still serve U.S. interests? Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed he sought to “taper off” the $3.8 billion annual U.S. military aid or even end this longstanding military assistance program entirely, due to the leverage it gives the U.S. over Israel.
Syria post-Assad. President Ahmed al-Sharaa has impressed many Syrians and foreign observers with his pragmatism and ability to stabilize the country. However, the path to peace has not been smooth.
CHINA THREAT
Chinese carrier-based fighter seen equipped with new supersonic anti-ship missile. The mainstay of Chinese carrier air wings was seen with missiles potentially capable of striking targets more than 1,000 km away at supersonic speeds.
China “just not there yet” on H-20 stealth bomber. Head of U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command downplayed the significance of Chinese efforts to develop new long-range strike aircraft with more global reach. He said China still remains, at best, a regional bomber force.
RUSSIA THREAT/UKRAINE WAR
Russia’s Grinding War in Ukraine. As the conflict in Ukraine nears the four-year mark, human casualties have reached staggering levels, with combined Russian and Ukrainian losses approaching two million. Ukrainian equipment losses. The two sides have also lost a confirmed combined total of 28,000 weapon platforms, though real numbers may be much higher. Russian equipment losses.
Russian stealth jets have arrived in North Africa, as filmed by an Algerian farmer. Algeria is the first country to receive the fifth-generation Su-57 stealth fighter.
EUROPEAN DEFENSE BUILDUP
German startup Hypersonica claimed a “significant” step toward delivering Europe’s first sovereign hypersonic strike capability by 2029, after the company’s test flight pushed its missile prototype to more than Mach 6 and a range of more than 300 km.
Erdogan pitches KAAN fighter jet as alternative to Western warplanes. Turkish President visited Saudi Arabia and Egypt earlier this month, marking fresh steps in the normalization of relations with key regional powers and opening the door to new defense deals.
US MILITARY
The military’s top EOD technology authority recently warned bomb technicians against uploading restricted technical material into generative AI systems — including Pentagon-approved platforms and commercial offerings.
“Hangar queens”: Congressional hearing reveals Osprey tiltrotor readiness rates declining as mishaps increase. This, as Navy and Marine Corps officials touted progress in overcoming the fatal V-22 Osprey gearbox issue that has limited operations since 2023.
