WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has directed all federal agencies to immediately cease using technology from Anthropic, a U.S.-based artificial intelligence company, following a high-profile standoff between the administration and the AI developer over restrictions on the military’s use of its products.
In a statement posted on his social media platform, Trump said he has instructed agencies to end their use of Anthropic’s technology and that the government would phase out its reliance over a six-month period for departments — including the Department of Defense — that currently use the company’s AI tools. “We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and will not do business with them again,” the president wrote.
The decision comes amid escalating tensions between Anthropic — the developer of the Claude AI model — and Pentagon officials who have been pressing the company to remove certain usage limits on its technology. Anthropic has insisted that it will not agree to terms that would enable its AI tools to be used for domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapon systems, citing ethical concerns.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had given Anthropic a Friday evening deadline to agree to broaden the military’s ability to use Claude, or risk losing a roughly $200 million contract and being labeled a “supply chain risk,” a designation that could limit the company’s role in future defense projects. Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, rejected changes that would undermine the company’s safety safeguards.
Under the administration’s directive, agencies must phase out their use of Anthropic’s AI tools over the coming months as officials pursue alternatives. The dispute underscores broader tensions over how to govern and use cutting-edge AI in national security missions and federal operations.
Anthropic’s technology has been used in sensitive government settings, including classified national security systems, but its ethical guardrails have put it at odds with parts of the Trump administration seeking fewer constraints on AI applications.
