Two congressional Democrats are urging the Justice Department’s internal watchdog to investigate what they describe as a “troubling pattern” of favorable outcomes for clients represented by Brad Bondi, the brother of Attorney General Pam Bondi, in cases involving the Justice Department.
In a letter sent Wednesday, Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Rep. Dave Min (D-Calif.) asked the Justice Department’s inspector general to review “whether Attorney General Pamela Bondi properly recused herself from, or otherwise improperly influenced, several cases involving defendants represented by her brother.”
“We are concerned that DOJ officials, including the Attorney General, may have failed to ensure the independence of internal accountability mechanisms,” the lawmakers wrote.
Brad Bondi, a defense attorney at the firm Paul Hastings, has secured several favorable outcomes for clients in recent months, including voluntary dismissals and settlements in cases connected to the Justice Department. In a LinkedIn post referenced in the Democrats’ letter, Bondi touted a string of “remarkable victories” on behalf of clients in 2025.
Among the cases cited by the lawmakers is that of Carolina Amesty, a former Florida state legislator who had faced two counts of theft of government property related to alleged COVID-19 relief fraud. Federal prosecutors ultimately dropped the charges after Brad Bondi intervened on her behalf.
Weeks later, the Justice Department also withdrew its case against another of Bondi’s clients, Sid Chakraverty, a Missouri property developer who had been charged with felony wire fraud. Both Amesty and Chakraverty denied wrongdoing in their respective cases.
At the time, the Justice Department said Attorney General Bondi had “no role” in either matter and that the decisions to dismiss the charges were “made through proper channels.”
More recently, Brad Bondi has been retained by a client negotiating a settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission over civil fraud allegations filed last September, further raising questions among Democrats about potential conflicts of interest involving the attorney general.
The New York Times reported that Bondi moved within the past month from a private apartment to one of several secure military installations where other senior officials in the Trump administration are currently living. The relocation was recommended after federal law enforcement flagged an increase in threats against the attorney general, including some linked to drug cartels and others from critics angered over the Justice Department’s management of the Epstein documents.
The call for an inspector general investigation comes as Attorney General Bondi has faced heightened scrutiny and security concerns tied to other controversies during her tenure. Bondi has reportedly relocated to housing on or near a military installation after authorities warned of escalating security threats linked to her handling of records related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Lawmakers requesting the probe said the inspector general’s review is necessary to determine whether proper recusals were followed and whether the Justice Department’s decision-making process remained independent in cases involving the attorney general’s family.
“Given the serious appearance of potential conflicts of interest,” Schiff and Min wrote, “a thorough and independent review is needed to ensure the integrity of the Department’s actions.”
