Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.

According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.

The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.

What began as a birthday celebration quickly turned into a high-stakes ordeal for Emmy-winning actress Niecy Nash and her family.

Nash is now revealing how a trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, spiraled into chaos — after cartel violence erupted across the region, leaving her and thousands of other travelers stranded.

Celebration Turns Into Crisis

Nash had traveled with her wife, children, and close friends to mark her Feb. 23 birthday, expecting a relaxing getaway.

Instead, she found herself navigating a rapidly deteriorating situation, made even more stressful by the number of people depending on her.

With multiple families in her group, Nash said she felt responsible for keeping everyone safe.

“It was scary because I let my kids bring their friends,” she said.

Fortunately, everyone returned safely, and Nash was able to enjoy a belated, more tranquil celebration in Los Angeles on March 13.

As People magazine reports:

Nash has good reason to celebrate. On Feb. 25, two days after her Feb. 23 birthday, the Grotesquerie alum shared a post to Instagram saying, “FINALLY‼️ Home from Puerto Vallarta 😳Went to celebrate my bday with my family, and got caught up in the cartel attacks!”

The video showed herself, her mother, her three children, their close friends and her wife Jessica Betts. It was intended to serve as a “thank you” to everyone who “covered us in prayer, sent well wishes, made calls to the US Embassy and shared your connects to get us out!”

Together in the airport, the group sang the Golden Girls theme song, “Thank You for Being a Friend,” and claimed to have some unfriendly encounters with locals who turned them away from food and refused to refund money.

“Challenges for sure showed up BUT GOD! 🙏🏾 Black people are so resilient! One thing for sure, two things for certain We. Will. Keep. Our. JOY! In the middle that packed airport where so many were frustrated over cancelled flights, long lines, and minimal seating , our joy was on full display!” she wrote.

Violence Erupts Across The Region

The unrest followed the killing of a major cartel figure known as “El Mencho,” triggering retaliation and widespread instability.

What unfolded next was anything but isolated.

The violence included:

  • Shootouts between cartel members and law enforcement
  • Fires and burning vehicles blocking roadways
  • Sudden roadblocks and shutdowns
  • Panic spreading through public spaces

For travelers, the impact was immediate.

Scrambling For A Way Out

Behind the scenes, Nash said efforts were underway to secure a safe exit.

That included tapping into personal contacts and reaching out for official assistance — including communication with the U.S. Embassy.

Eventually, those efforts paid off.

Nash and her family were able to navigate the chaos and return home safely, but not without a lasting impression.

A Stark Reminder For Travelers

While Nash is best known for her roles in “Reno 911!,” “Claws,” and “When They See Us” and for her Emmy-winning performance in “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” her experience highlights something far more serious than Hollywood.

Situations like this can escalate quickly — even in major tourist destinations.

And when they do, travelers can find themselves caught in circumstances well beyond their control.

Keeping Perspective After The Ordeal

Despite the intensity of the experience, Nash said she focused on staying grounded throughout.

Even in the middle of uncertainty, she emphasized the importance of maintaining perspective and “keeping joy.”

It’s a mindset she credits with helping her and her loved ones get through a situation that could have turned much worse.
