Greg Bovino, the outgoing chief at large of the United States Border Patrol, is leaving his post at the end of March.

In an interview with The New York Times, Bovino said his primary regret was not apprehending more individuals crossing the border illegally. He described his approach as forceful and unapologetic, emphasizing a philosophy of maximum enforcement.

Enforcement Strategy and Rhetoric

Bovino characterized his mission in stark terms, explaining that his goal was “total border domination.” His comments reflect a broader enforcement approach that has defined much of the second Trump Administration’s immigration policy.

Donald Trump appeared to echo that sentiment in separate remarks, saying he understood Bovino’s perspective and also expressed a desire for higher levels of apprehensions, particularly targeting individuals accused of serious crimes.

Operation Metro Surge and Fallout

Bovino recently led “Operation Metro Surge,” a Department of Homeland Security initiative targeting illegal immigrants in Minnesota. The operation drew national attention and inspired protests, which escalated in the wake of two shooting incidents involving federal officers.

The events intensified scrutiny of enforcement tactics and raised questions among lawmakers as well as the public.

Following the operation and mounting controversy, Bovino’s role came to an end earlier this month.

Internal Criticism

Despite support from some political figures, Bovino also faced criticism within homeland security circles. According to reports, several current and former officials described his leadership as disruptive, citing concerns about his methods and adherence to institutional norms.

Some officials, speaking anonymously, said his approach alienated colleagues and complicated coordination within the broader federal system at times .

Career and Departure

Bovino began his career in California’s El Centro sector and served in multiple regions over the years. His final assignment in Minnesota marked one of the most high-profile chapters of his career.

After the operation and subsequent controversies, he returned to California before announcing his retirement.

Broader Context

Bovino’s departure comes at a time when immigration enforcement remains one of the most contentious issues in American politics. His comments and leadership style reflect one side of a deeply divided debate over how aggressively the federal government should police the border and interior.

As policymakers continue to clash over immigration reform and enforcement priorities, figures like Bovino highlight the challenges—and disagreements—within the system responsible for carrying out those policies.
