Before politics, she had a very different stance…
BATON ROUGE, La. — A newly resurfaced video and past statements from Rep. Julia Letlow, a Louisiana Republican and Trump-endorsed Senate candidate, are drawing scrutiny as she campaigns against diversity, equity, and inclusion policies.
Letlow, who is challenging Sen. Bill Cassidy in the state’s GOP primary, has aligned herself with President Donald Trump’s broader push to dismantle DEI initiatives in education and government. On the campaign trail, she has pledged to eliminate such programs, framing them as part of a broader fight against what many conservatives describe as “woke ideology.”
However, her past record — particularly from her time in higher education — is complicating that message.

Past support for DEI initiatives resurfaces
Before entering politics, Letlow worked in academia, including roles tied to the University of Louisiana Monroe. During that time, she was associated with efforts that emphasized diversity and anti-racism initiatives.
In 2020, Letlow was among those who supported a university statement highlighting diversity as a “core value” and calling for action against racism following the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery.
Separate reporting and resurfaced clips also indicate that Letlow previously backed the expansion of DEI-related infrastructure at universities, including expressing openness to establishing dedicated offices focused on diversity initiatives.
Critics have pointed to those positions as evidence that her current campaign rhetoric marks a shift from her earlier views.
The Louisiana-based conservative politics blog, The Hayride, has a more nuanced view:
Is Julia Letlow woke? Is she a “liberal” wolf in sheep’s clothing?
The answer to that is she wouldn’t have married Luke Letlow, who was one of the better conservatives Louisiana politics has ever seen, if she was truly on the Left. In case you haven’t noticed, most leftist women are far too strident about politics to bridge the political divide.
What’s a lot more likely, and it isn’t particularly exonerating, is that Letlow was saying what she thought she needed to say in order to get a job running a university.
Here’s something you probably haven’t thought about: for all the sales pitches about DEI that it was going to help out with ending racism and getting black folks the hand up they’ve needed, when President Trump took office and immediately started scrubbing all the DEI stuff out of the federal government there was a shocking dearth of real outrage in the black community about that.
Campaign responds amid scrutiny
Letlow’s campaign has pushed back, arguing her current stance reflects a broader Republican effort to rein in what it views as overreach in education policy.
A spokesman has said she remains committed to “reining in DEI initiatives” and aligning with conservative priorities that helped secure Trump’s endorsement.
Her candidacy is part of a high-profile primary shaped in part by Trump’s continued dominance within the Republican Party.
The president endorsed Letlow earlier this year, calling her a “total winner” as she seeks to unseat Cassidy, who has faced criticism from Trump. Trump’s endorsement made it clear he has not forgiven Cassidy for voting to convict him during his second impeachment trial, when Cassidy said Trump was guilty of inciting the Jan. 6 riot.
A broader political flashpoint
The controversy reflects a wider national debate within Republican politics over DEI programs, particularly in higher education. In recent years, GOP lawmakers have increasingly targeted such initiatives, arguing they promote ideological bias or discriminatory practices.
At the same time, opponents of those efforts say DEI programs are aimed at addressing longstanding inequities and expanding opportunity.
In a closely watched GOP primary, voters may have to decide: do past positions matter more than current promises — and just how much does Trump’s endorsement actually sway the race?

If ( a BIG IF ) she WAS a lib, but ‘saw the light’ … she’d know the best way to counter that philosophy!
But that’s an ‘IF’! Or is she, as was stated, a wolf in sheep’s clothing?
That state NEEDS another person running for that office!
