As other probes continue…
WASHINGTON — The Justice Department is investigating former Rep. Eric Swalwell over allegations of sexual assault and misconduct involving at least five women, adding to a growing list of legal and ethics probes surrounding the California Democrat.
According to reporting, the DOJ inquiry is separate from ongoing sexual misconduct investigations in New York and Los Angeles.
Swalwell has denied allegations of criminal wrongdoing, including rape and sexual assault, calling them “flatly false,” while acknowledging what he described as “mistakes in judgment” in his past.
Multiple Investigations Underway
Swalwell is facing scrutiny on several fronts:
- A Manhattan District Attorney investigation into a 2024 sexual assault allegation
- A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department investigation tied to a separate allegation
- A House Ethics Committee probe examining potential misconduct and violations of congressional rules
- A Justice Department inquiry tied to separate allegations
Background on Allegations
The criminal investigations stem from allegations by multiple women.
One accuser, model Lonna Drewes, alleged that Swalwell drugged her during a 2018 meeting in a West Hollywood hotel room and later sexually assaulted her. Another former staffer alleged he assaulted her twice, in 2019 and 2024, and said she was unable to consent.
Additional claims from political associates describe a pattern of alleged inappropriate behavior, though those accounts remain unverified.
In a video statement, Swalwell described the sexual assault allegations as “flat false” and “absolutely false,” stating, “They did not happen. They have never happened, and I will fight them with everything that I have.”
His attorney, Sara Azari, issued a statement on his behalf declaring that he “categorically and unequivocally denies each and every allegation of sexual misconduct and assault”.
Political Fallout
The mounting investigations have had significant political consequences.
Swalwell suspended his campaign for California governor and resigned from Congress this week amid bipartisan pressure.
The developments have intensified scrutiny within Democratic circles and prompted calls for further accountability.
What Comes Next
Authorities have not announced any charges in connection with the investigations.
Officials continue to gather evidence and review claims, with outcomes likely to depend on findings from multiple agencies operating in parallel.
