Ukraine carried out one of its most ambitious long-range drone operations of the war Wednesday, striking a Russian guided-missile warship in dry dock and setting fire to a major oil terminal near St. Petersburg, according to Ukrainian officials and open-source imagery.

The coordinated attack targeted the Steregushchiy-class corvette Boikiy at Kronstadt naval base and the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky over Russia’s second-largest city as the annual St. Petersburg International Economic.

Good morning. Federal investigations are colliding with politics in Washington and Virginia, while a heartbreaking murder case in Texas has reached its final chapter in court. Together, the morning’s headlines reflect a day shaped by allegations, accountability, and the heavy consequences of violence.

Congress Expands Scrutiny of Southern Poverty Law Center

The House Judiciary Committee is opening its own investigation into the Southern Poverty Law Center following a federal indictment accusing the organization of financial crimes tied to payments made to extremist sources.

According to congressional investigators, the follows claims that millions of donor dollars were funneled over nearly a decade to individuals connected to groups including the Ku Klux Klan and the American Nazi Party. Lawmakers say some of those informants remained active in extremist organizing while receiving money.

Committee Chairman Jim Jordan is now demanding internal records and communications from the organization, particularly regarding any coordination with the Biden administration on civil rights matters.

The allegations have intensified political tensions because of the SPLC’s longstanding role as a prominent watchdog organization frequently consulted by federal agencies and large companies. Investigators are also examining whether federal law enforcement relied on SPLC material in internal assessments and training programs during the previous administration.

The organization has not yet publicly responded in detail to the latest congressional action, and the criminal case remains in its early stages.

FBI Raid Targets Powerful Virginia Democrat

Federal agents carried out a dramatic raid Wednesday morning on the office of Virginia Senate President Pro Tempore Louise Lucas, one of the state’s most influential Democratic lawmakers.

Investigators removed electronic devices and boxes from Lucas’s Portsmouth office while simultaneously executing warrants at a nearby cannabis dispensary. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the exact focus of the investigation, and no charges have been announced.

The operation immediately sent shockwaves through Virginia politics, where Lucas has been a central figure for decades. A close ally of Democratic leadership in the state, she has played a major role in battles over education, energy policy, gun legislation, and redistricting.

While officials have emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that no conclusions have been reached, the federal probe adds to growing scrutiny surrounding ethics and corruption concerns in Virginia political circles.

For now, many of the key questions remain unanswered: what investigators are examining, how broad the inquiry may become, and whether additional political figures could ultimately be drawn into the case.

Texas Jury Sentences FedEx Driver to Death

A Texas jury has sentenced former FedEx driver Tanner Horner to death for the kidnapping and murder of 7-year-old Athena Strand, bringing one of the state’s most disturbing criminal cases to a close.

Prosecutors spent weeks presenting evidence surrounding the 2022 killing, including audio and video recordings from inside Horner’s delivery van. Jurors heard portions of Athena’s final moments after she was abducted from outside her family’s home while Horner was delivering a Christmas package.

The recordings became a defining moment of the trial, with jurors visibly emotional as prosecutors detailed the events leading to the child’s death.

Defense attorneys acknowledged the brutality of the crime but argued Horner suffered from significant mental and developmental issues stemming from childhood conditions and exposure to toxins. Jurors ultimately rejected the request for life imprisonment without parole and determined Horner posed an ongoing danger.

The case has drawn national attention not only because of the horrifying details, but because of the ordinary setting in which it began—a routine holiday delivery that ended in tragedy for a young family days before Christmas.
