Republican Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) is confronting a widening legal and political crisis after serious allegations of physical abuse were filed by his ex-wife, Emily Moreno — the daughter of U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno — alongside a growing list of related court disputes, defamation claims, and prior accusations that are now resurfacing.
Miller denies all wrongdoing and says the allegations are part of a politically and emotionally charged custody battle.
This is getting exceedingly ugly between an Ohio GOP senator and an Ohio GOP congressman. https://t.co/j8XKbZ6Vi8

But court filings, police confirmations, and attorney statements have added layers of complexity that are now drawing national attention.
Boiling Water Allegation at Center of Abuse Claims
Emily Moreno has accused Miller of serious physical abuse, including a June 2024 incident in which she alleges he threw a pot of boiling water at her during an argument, striking her in the chest.
She has also described what she calls a broader pattern of physical abuse and “rage episodes” during the relationship.
Some outlets have published images said to show bruising on her arms and abdomen, which her attorneys argue are consistent with her account of repeated physical incidents.
Key allegations include:
- A June 2024 boiling water incident allegedly causing injury
- Claims of physical aggression during multiple domestic disputes
- Alleged patterns of escalating rage during custody-related conflicts

Miller has strongly denied all allegations, calling them fabricated and strategically deployed during a contentious custody dispute over their daughter.
Miller Releases Recordings, Pushes Back Hard
In response, Miller has released doorbell camera footage and an audio recording from August 2024 — after the alleged June incident — in which Moreno appears to describe him as a “very kind person” who would never physically harm her.
His team argues this undermines the credibility of her claims.
However, legal proceedings have since introduced new complications that go beyond competing narratives.
Attorneys Admit Miller Fabricated Testimony
According to reporting from early May 2026, Miller’s own attorneys acknowledged issues involving disputed testimony connected to a protection order request.
The controversy centers on Miller’s sworn statements about a Feb. 1 custody exchange:
- Miller submitted a notarized statement claiming that his girlfriend was within earshot of the exchange
- He testified under oath that surveillance footage confirmed her presence
- His legal team later informed opposing counsel that the girlfriend was not actually present
Moreno’s attorneys have since demanded sanctions, alleging Miller submitted fabricated testimony to strengthen his legal position in the custody dispute.
Police Investigating Child Abuse Allegations
Adding another layer, police in Bay Village, Ohio, confirmed late last month that they are investigating reports of suspected child abuse involving the couple’s daughter.
No charges have been announced, and authorities have not publicly detailed the scope of the investigation.
Separate Defamation Lawsuit Adds to Legal Pressure
Miller is also facing a separate defamation lawsuit tied to another incident and is no stranger to litigation.
Road-rage allegations (Dr. Feras Hamdan)
In February 2026, Dr. Feras Hamdan sued Miller for defamation, alleging Miller falsely claimed he was run off the road and threatened during a June 2025 road-rage incident. Hamdan’s lawsuit cites Tesla vehicle data and other evidence that he says contradict Miller’s account.
Prior defamation dispute (Stephanie Grisham)
In 2021, former White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham, Miller’s ex-girlfriend, alleged he was physically abusive during their relationship. Miller denied the claims and later filed a defamation lawsuit, which he dropped in August 2023.
Political Stakes Rising Inside GOP Circles
While no criminal charges have been filed in the domestic abuse case, the combination of allegations, court disputes, and conflicting evidence has created mounting political pressure.
Inside Republican circles, the situation is increasingly viewed as a reputational risk, particularly given:
- The involvement of a U.S. senator’s family
- The ongoing child welfare investigation
- The confirmation of inconsistent sworn testimony
Reelection Race Tightens in Ohio’s 7th District
The legal turmoil is now spilling directly into Miller’s political future.
He remains the incumbent in Ohio’s GOP-leaning 7th Congressional District, but the race is no longer viewed as safe.
Political analysts at Sabato’s Crystal Ball recently downgraded Miller’s reelection outlook from “Safe Republican” to “Likely Republican” in early May 2026, citing both legal uncertainty and political vulnerability.
Democrats are quickly coalescing around a campaign strategy that puts Miller’s legal issues front and center, highlighting his “baggage.”
Their nominee, Brian Poindexter — a Brook Park city councilman and union ironworker — is still viewed as an underdog in a district that leans Republican. But observers believe Miller’s legal challenges could create an opening in a broader political environment defined by unusually high voter volatility.
