The House Ethics Committee is investigating Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-N.C.) over allegations involving inappropriate conduct toward female staffers and claims that he fostered a hostile work environment.
According to reporting from Axios, the investigation stems from accusations involving two female aides in their 20s who allegedly received personal gifts, affectionate notes, invitations to alcohol-fueled outings, and other attention that sources described as crossing professional boundaries. One report alleged Edwards tearfully read a poem to a departing staffer during a farewell gathering while photos of the two played in a slideshow.
According to four sources, Edwards had no known history of writing poetry or personally organizing farewell events for staff members leaving the office.

The outlet said its reporting was based on obtained text messages, photographs, and interviews with individuals familiar with the operations of Edwards’ office.
The North Carolina Republican dismissed the allegations as “horsesh*t.”
“In the mountains we have to shovel horsesh*t,” he told a local outlet earlier this month. “In D.C. I have to deal with horsesh*t. And these allegations are more horsesh*t.”
People magazine provided further details from Axios’ reporting regarding the 65-year-old married lawmaker:
In the Wednesday report, the outlet alleged Edwards texted the staffer in May 2025 that he was disappointed she wouldn’t go to dinner with him because she was worried about rumors around the office.
“It’s disappointing to feel something that used to be easy has gotten complicated,” Edwards reportedly wrote. “I didn’t expect outside chatter to change that.”
In the days since the initial reports from Axios, CNN and others, Edwards has repeatedly denied allegations against him without addressing specific accusations.
The reports also allege Edwards arranged for flowers to be waiting in the staffer’s hotel room at the Bellagio in Las Vegas months after she had left his congressional office. Axios further reported that the congressman sent handwritten notes expressing deep personal affection, including one stating the woman had “written a complex chapter in my heart.”
Edwards claims he welcomes the investigation, describing the accusations as politically motivated. The Ethics Committee emphasized that opening an investigation does not imply guilt or that any rules violations occurred.
The case comes amid renewed scrutiny over congressional workplace culture and sexual misconduct allegations on Capitol Hill, with several lawmakers from both parties facing ethics investigations or resignations in recent months.
