A growing number of musicians are backing out of the Freedom 250 concert series set to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, citing concerns that the event is more politically affiliated than they were initially led to believe.
Freedom 250 Presents: The Great American State Fair is scheduled to take place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., from June 25 through July 10 as part of the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration. Organizers originally promoted the event as a large-scale patriotic festival featuring concerts, military tributes, state exhibits and celebrations of American history.
But as the festival approaches, several performers have publicly withdrawn after learning of the event’s ties to President Trump and organizations associated with his administration.
The departures have transformed what was intended to be a broadly unifying celebration into yet another battleground in America’s increasingly polarized cultural landscape.
Martina McBride Says Event Was ‘Misleading’
Country music star Martina McBride became one of the most prominent artists to exit the lineup.
In a statement posted to social media, McBride said she initially agreed to perform because she believed the festival would be a nonpartisan celebration of all 50 states.
She said she had envisioned the event as a larger version of the state fairs she has performed at throughout her career.
“In my mind I thought this was a great way to celebrate the states and also bring people together in the way that only music can,” she said.
McBride ultimately concluded that the event no longer aligned with that vision and announced she would not perform on opening night.
Bret Michaels Also Walks Away
Poison frontman Bret Michaels issued a similar statement explaining his decision to withdraw.
“When this opportunity was originally presented to my team, it was described as a celebration of our country through music and a chance to honor our veterans, active military, first responders, teachers and hardworking Americans from all walks of life,” Michaels wrote.
The rocker emphasized that he has long supported veterans and patriotic causes but said the event had evolved into something more politically divisive than originally advertised.
“Unfortunately, what was presented to us as a celebration of our country has evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of,” Michaels said.
He also cited safety concerns and threats directed at himself, his family and his crew.
More Artists Exit
Several other performers have also announced their departures.
Rapper Young MC said he was never informed the event was connected to Trump when he initially agreed to participate.
“The artists were never told about any political involvement with the event,” he wrote on social media.
Morris Day and The Time confirmed they would not be participating, though Day offered little explanation beyond posting: “It’s A No For Me.”
The Commodores likewise withdrew while emphasizing that they do not wish to publicly affiliate with any political party.
“Our music has always been our voice and we choose not to publicly affiliate with any single political party,” the group stated.
Others Refuse To Back Down
Several artists remain committed to performing despite criticism from fans and activists.
Vanilla Ice has openly embraced the event and its patriotic theme.
“Everyone is welcome to attend and celebrate USA’s Birthday and our Freedom!” a representative for the rapper said.
Flo Rida is still scheduled to perform July 2, though he has not publicly addressed the controversy despite mounting pressure from critics online.
C+C Music Factory frontman Freedom Williams acknowledged he initially considered dropping out after learning about the event’s political associations but ultimately decided to perform anyway.
Williams argued that allowing political activists to dictate where artists can and cannot perform would only deepen national divisions.
Milli Vanilli’s involvement remains unclear after conflicting statements emerged from individuals associated with the group.
America’s Birthday Becomes Another Culture War Battleground
The controversy surrounding Freedom 250 reflects a broader trend in American entertainment and public life, where even ostensibly nonpartisan events are viewed through a political lens.
For organizers, the festival was intended to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary and showcase the nation’s history, military and cultural achievements.
As the festival approaches, organizers still maintain a substantial lineup and continue promoting the event as a nationwide celebration of American history and freedom.
Whether the remaining performances can overshadow the growing list of high-profile withdrawals remains to be seen.
