DOJ Seeks Names, Addresses, And Banking Info Of Reddit, 𝕏 Users Criticizing ICE Tactics

The Justice Department is seeking identifying information on Reddit and X users who criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement tactics online, according to a Bloomberg report.

The reported requests include names, addresses, and banking information — a far broader sweep than basic account details — and appear tied to posts criticizing ICE operations and agents.

A fight over speech and subpoenas

The controversy centers on the government’s use of administrative subpoenas, which do not require prior approval from a judge.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation says DHS and ICE have used a customs statute, 19 U.S.C. § 1509, to demand identifying information from platforms including Google, Meta, Reddit, and Discord. That law is generally tied to customs duties and imports, not political speech online.

EFF sued DHS and ICE in April after the agencies failed to produce records explaining how these subpoenas are authorized, reviewed, or used to identify online critics.

Reddit user became test case

One case involved an Oregon-based Reddit user identified in court records as “John Doe.” According to reports, an ICE agent issued an administrative summons on March 4 seeking a month’s worth of user data. Reddit notified the user two days later.

The government later used a grand jury subpoena to demand the user’s name, address, phone number, IP addressm and other personal details. Attorneys for the user said they reviewed the posts and found criticism of ICE, but no criminal activity.

Platforms are under pressure

Reddit’s own law enforcement guidelines say the company tries to notify users when the government seeks their account information, unless barred by law or limited exceptions apply.

X says it does not release nonpublic user information except in response to legal process, such as a subpoena, court order or valid emergency request.

That is the legal pressure point: The government can issue demands, and platforms must decide whether to comply, narrow the request or fight it in court.

Why this matters

There is an obvious public safety case for investigating legitimate threats against federal agents.

Nobody has a constitutional right to dox law enforcement officers, threaten violence, or physically obstruct lawful operations carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

But there is also an obvious constitutional danger if federal investigators begin using sweeping subpoenas and surveillance authorities to identify people primarily for criticizing ICE online.

That is the point where this story becomes much bigger than immigration politics.

The same investigative powers used today against anti-ICE activists or anonymous online critics could eventually be deployed against almost any politically controversial speech tomorrow.

And once government agencies begin treating aggressive political criticism as presumptively suspicious, the chilling effect on public debate becomes extremely real.

So far, the Department of Justice has not publicly explained the full scope of the investigation.

Until it does, the core question remains unavoidable:

Is the government investigating genuine criminal threats — or attempting to unmask political critics?
