A Louisiana man suspected of driving while impaired allegedly tried twice to evade police by fleeing into a swamp. The second attempt ended with an alligator attacking him.
Victor Rivas, 40, was arrested Sunday in St. Charles Parish after what began as a traffic stop and turned into a chase involving a damaged sports car, a swamp, drones, and a gator.
Authorities say the alligator left Rivas with injuries to both arms before deputies finally took him into custody.
Highway crash sparks pursuit
The incident began near New Orleans when Rivas allegedly crashed his Toyota Supra into a concrete barrier.
According to the Louisiana State Police, the impact was severe enough to tear off one of the vehicle’s tires.
Even without a tire, troopers said the car continued down the road before eventually stopping on an interstate in neighboring St. Charles Parish.
When officers approached the vehicle, they allegedly observed signs of impairment and began a roadside investigation.
Before that investigation could proceed, police said Rivas took off on foot.
First trip into the swamp
Authorities said Rivas fled from an elevated section of highway and disappeared into the swamp below.
Louisiana State Police and deputies from the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office launched a search of the area.
Officers eventually spotted him walking near another highway and moved in to make an arrest.
But according to investigators, Rivas wasn’t finished running.
An alligator joins the chase
As officers closed the distance, Rivas allegedly headed back into the swamp.
This time, he wasn’t alone.
Authorities said an alligator surfaced after Rivas entered the water and attacked him, biting both of his arms.
Body-camera footage released by the sheriff’s office captured the encounter from a distance. The video shows Rivas and the alligator struggling near the bank for roughly 30 seconds before the animal retreated.

Even after the attack, authorities said Rivas continued trying to escape.
Drones locate suspect
Deputies ultimately deployed drones to track Rivas through the swamp.
After locating him, officers took him into custody and transported him to a hospital for treatment.
The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office said his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Following medical treatment, Rivas was booked into the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center.
He faces charges of driving while impaired and resisting an officer.
Louisiana State Police said additional warrants connected to the original highway crash are pending.
State police issue warning
State police used the unusual incident as a reminder about the risks associated with impaired driving.
“Impaired driving can lead to serious and unpredictable consequences,” the agency said in a statement.
“Motorists are urged to make responsible decisions, plan ahead, and always designate a sober driver.”
Few impaired-driving cases involve a damaged sports car, a swamp pursuit, and an alligator attack. But for Louisiana law enforcement, the message remained the same: bad decisions behind the wheel can lead to consequences no one sees coming.
