President Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric against Iran on Thursday, warning that the United States will launch additional military strikes if Tehran does not agree to a peace deal and declaring that the U.S. will be “taking Kharg Island,” Iran’s most important oil-export hub.
In a Truth Social post, Trump declared that the United States would launch a major strike against Iran this evening, asserting that the country’s navy, air force, radar systems, air defenses, and much of its offensive military capability had already been eliminated. He wrote: “The United States will be hitting Iran (Whose Navy, Air Force, Radar, Anti Aircraft, and all other forms of Defense, together with most of its offensive capability, are GONE!), VERY HARD TONIGHT.”
Why Kharg Island Matters

Kharg Island sits roughly 15 miles off Iran’s coast and serves as the backbone of the country’s oil economy. The island handles the vast majority of Iranian crude exports and has long been viewed by military planners as one of Tehran’s most vulnerable strategic assets.
Trump’s remarks are significant because previous U.S. military operations against Kharg Island deliberately avoided striking oil infrastructure. In March, U.S. forces conducted major attacks against more than 90 Iranian military targets on the island while leaving petroleum facilities intact. Administration officials at the time argued they wanted to pressure Iran without triggering a global energy shock.
Now Trump appears to be signaling a more ambitious objective.
A Long-Discussed White House Option
The idea of seizing or occupying Kharg Island is not new.
Reports dating back to March indicated the White House had explored taking control of the island as a way to break Iran’s grip on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Administration officials reportedly viewed the island as a pressure point because it processes roughly 90% of Iran’s crude exports.
Military analysts have warned, however, that any attempt to physically occupy the island would represent a major escalation and could draw American ground forces into a prolonged conflict with Iran.
