Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is once again at the center of a legal matter after California authorities recommended that prosecutors charge him with misdemeanor hit-and-run stemming from a July 3 traffic incident in Napa County.

The recommendation marks the latest legal controversy involving Paul Pelosi, whose 2022 drunken driving arrest drew national attention.

Deputies Investigate Yountville Crash

According to the Napa County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded shortly after 2:30 p.m. on July 3 to the 6700 block of Yount Street in Yountville after receiving a 911 report of a hit-and-run collision.

A witness told authorities that a brown convertible traveling north struck an empty vehicle that was legally parked along the street. Investigators said the impact damaged the parked vehicle’s rear end and pushed one of its tires over the curb.

The witness reported that the driver briefly stopped before leaving the scene.

Deputies later found the damaged convertible on nearby Yountville Cross Road, where a California Highway Patrol officer had already stopped behind it. Authorities said the vehicle had significant damage to its front-right side and was partially blocking the roadway.

Investigators identified the driver as 86-year-old Paul Pelosi through his driver’s license.

According to the sheriff’s office, Pelosi acknowledged that he knew he had struck something but told deputies he did not know what it was.

A roadside breath test measured 0.00 blood alcohol content, ruling out alcohol as a factor in the crash.

Prosecutors Asked To File Misdemeanor Charge

The Napa County Sheriff’s Office is recommending that the Napa County District Attorney file a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge involving property damage.

Pelosi was not arrested. Authorities said that is standard procedure for misdemeanor property-damage hit-and-run cases when an immediate custodial arrest is not required.

Investigators also referred Pelosi to the California Department of Motor Vehicles for a driving re-evaluation, a routine step for older drivers involved in traffic incidents.

Pelosi Issues Apology

A spokesperson for Paul Pelosi told The California Post that he has accepted responsibility for the incident.

“Mr. Paul Pelosi has personally apologized to the owner of the vehicle and assured them that he would take responsibility for the damage to their vehicle,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would not comment further, describing the matter as private.

Earlier DUI Case Drew National Attention

The latest incident has renewed attention on Paul Pelosi’s previous legal troubles.

In 2022, he was arrested in Napa County after crashing his Porsche while driving under the influence. He later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DUI and received a sentence of five days in jail and three years of probation. He ultimately served one day through a courthouse work program.

The case generated widespread attention and prompted criticism from some observers who questioned whether Pelosi received preferential treatment because of his family’s political prominence.

Broader Scrutiny Of The Pelosi Family

The latest development also comes as the Pelosi family continues to face criticism over congressional stock trading.

Nancy Pelosi and her husband have attracted scrutiny for years over investment transactions that critics argue have been unusually well timed. Although no evidence has established that Paul Pelosi violated insider trading laws, the family’s investment gains have fueled bipartisan efforts in Congress to prohibit lawmakers and their immediate family members from trading individual stocks while in office.

Nancy Pelosi served as speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. She now holds the honorary title of speaker emerita and has announced that she plans to leave Congress in early 2027.

Months after Paul Pelosi’s 2022 DUI arrest, he was seriously injured when an intruder broke into the couple’s San Francisco home looking for Nancy Pelosi and repeatedly struck him with a hammer. He suffered a skull fracture and later recovered from the attack.
