McConnell’s Aides Reveal He Remains Hospitalized Weeks After Medical Emergency

WASHINGTON — Sen. Mitch McConnell’s office has acknowledged that the longtime Kentucky Republican remains hospitalized nearly three weeks after a serious medical emergency, offering the first substantive update on his condition since he was rushed to a Washington hospital in mid-June.

A spokesperson said Thursday that the 84-year-old senator “continues to improve” and remains engaged with Senate business while recovering.

“Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital,” spokesman David Popp said in a statement. “The senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.”

Update Follows Questions About His Condition

The statement marks the first significant health update from McConnell’s office since June 22, when aides said only that he would miss Senate votes while continuing his recovery.

The renewed update came after reports highlighted the lack of information about the senator’s condition following his hospitalization.

Medical Emergency Was More Serious Than Initially Disclosed

Newly released emergency dispatch records indicate McConnell was found unconscious at his Washington residence on June 14.

Radio traffic from District of Columbia emergency responders described an Advanced Life Support ambulance being dispatched to the senator’s home for an unconscious patient with “CPR in progress” following a reported cardiac arrest. McConnell’s office has not confirmed whether he suffered a heart attack or identified the underlying medical condition.

On the day of the incident, aides said only that McConnell had been admitted to a hospital and was receiving “excellent care.” The following day, his office said he remained engaged in Senate business despite missing votes.

Long History Of Health Challenges

McConnell has experienced a series of well-publicized health issues in recent years.

The seven-term senator has suffered multiple falls, including one that resulted in a concussion and fractured ribs, and twice froze during public appearances in 2023. Earlier this year, he spent more than a week in the hospital after experiencing flu-like symptoms.

McConnell announced in 2025 that he would not seek an eighth Senate term, with his current term scheduled to end in January 2027.

Senate Remains In Recess

The Senate is not scheduled to return until mid-July, allowing McConnell additional time to recover without missing legislative business on the floor.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune has previously said he has spoken with McConnell and described him as remaining actively involved in conference discussions despite his hospitalization.

As The Daily Beast reports:

In October last year, the former Senate majority leader fell over at the Capitol after being asked about ICE by activists from the Sunrise Movement. A staffer and a member of the Capitol Hill police quickly helped him back to his feet.

McConnell was also photographed being escorted out of the Capitol in a wheelchair in February 2025 after falling twice in quick succession; once on the stairs outside the Senate chamber and again during a Senate lunch meeting.

Spokesman Dave Popp said later that the senator was fine, adding, “The lingering effects of polio in his left leg will not disrupt his regular schedule of work.”

Previously, state law required the governor — in this case, Democratic Governor Andy Beshear — to appoint a replacement to serve until the next election. In April 2024, Kentucky Republicans pushed through legislation scrapping this precedent and amending the process so that a special election would be held immediately instead.

While aides say the senator’s condition is improving, they have not disclosed his diagnosis, whether he remains in intensive care, or when he is expected to be discharged from the hospital.
