The son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has been arrested after allegedly shooting his mother multiple times inside the family’s Virginia home.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, faces charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to a reported shooting in the 20000 block of Northpark Drive in Ashburn at approximately 7:32 p.m. Sunday. Authorities found an adult woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and transported her to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.
The sheriff’s office did not publicly identify the woman. Fox News Digital and other reports identified her as 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy, Elijah’s mother and Eric Bieniemy’s wife.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters Monday that Mia Bieniemy was in stable condition.
“Mia is stable, which is a plus,” Reid said during a training camp press conference.
Authorities arrested Elijah Bieniemy in connection with the shooting and transported him to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, where he was being held without bond.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains underway but added that investigators do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive or described the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Eric Bieniemy was reportedly with the Chiefs at their training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, when the shooting occurred. He was absent from Monday’s workout after leaving the team to be with his family.
“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family,” Reid said. “Thoughts and prayers with them.”
Reid said the organization would give Bieniemy the time and support necessary to handle the family emergency.
“On these things, real life, you take care of that,” the coach said..
The Chiefs also acknowledged the incident in a statement while asking that the family’s privacy be respected.
“The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family,” the team said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
Reid did not provide a timetable for Bieniemy’s return. Pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier and offensive line coach Andy Heck are expected to oversee his responsibilities while the Chiefs continue installing their offense during training camp.
Bieniemy, 56, returned to Kansas City this year after previously serving as the team’s offensive coordinator from 2018 through 2022. During that period, the Chiefs reached three Super Bowls and won two championships as quarterback Patrick Mahomes developed into one of the NFL’s biggest stars.
Bieniemy later coached for the Washington Commanders, UCLA and the Chicago Bears before rejoining Reid’s staff.
The Chiefs’ veterans were scheduled to report to training camp Tuesday, with the first full-team practice set for Wednesday.
