Ayman al-Zawahri dutifully served as Osama bin Laden’s top lieutenant until a team of Navy SEALs punched his boss’ time card for him in 2011.
Since then, Zawahri reigned as the head of the terrorist organization, although decades of constant U.S. military pressure have reduced it to a shadow of its former self.
That is Zawahri ran it until this weekend, as President Joe Biden will announce this evening that a drone strike in Afghanistan recently killed the infamous terror leader.
As USA Today reports:
Biden will speak at 7:30 p.m. ET, according to a last-minute update to the president’s schedule, as he remains isolated in the White House battling a rebound case of COVID-19.
Over the weekend, the United States conducted “a counterterrorism operation against a significant” al-Qaida target in Afghanistan, an administration official said. “The operation was successful and there were no civilian casualties.”
The announcement comes nearly one year after the Biden administration’s military withdrawal from Afghanistan, after 20 years of the U.S.-led war and the Taliban’s return to power.
According to Politico, Zawahiri was in Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital.
One of the people briefed on the operation said the strike in Kabul was led by the CIA.
