Conservative Republican Dan Newhouse has overcome long odds. As one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach President Trump for his actions — and inactions — leading up to the U.S. Capitol attack, he immediately became a target for a vengeful ex-president.
Elsewhere last week, a Trump-backed, election-denying candidate named John Gibbs defeated incumbent Rep. Peter Meijer in the GOP primary for Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee boosted the more extreme Gibbs in ads to likely primary voters, helping put him over the top.
Over the weekend, updated results from Washington State confirmed Newhouse defeated a Trump-backed challenger.
The Washington Examiner reports:
Newhouse managed to emerge from Washington’s all-party primary with a narrow lead ahead of Democratic candidate Doug White. Newhouse’s biggest political foe, though, was another Republican running in the Aug. 2 all-party primary, Loren Culp. Updated results Friday night showed Culp in third place and out of the running.
Newhouse likely owes his victory to Washington’s nonpartisan blanket primary process. Pro-impeachment Republican Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler may still fend off her Trump-endorsed challenger. In that case, it will no doubt be in part to Washington’s primary rules that benefit non-Trumpian candidates.
Although, Herrera Beutler may “need a miracle.”

Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, had been in second place since election night in the 3rd District race in Southwest Washington.
But Kent, her Trump-endorsed Republican challenger, has surged in later tallies, cutting deeply into Herrera Beutler’s lead and threatening to push her into third place.
Kent has gained ground every day, in a trendline that points to him surpassing Herrera Beutler when more votes are counted next week.

As of Friday evening, Herrera Beutler had 22.6% of the vote to Kent’s 22.5% — a margin of just 257 votes. Kent had trailed by 1,945 on Thursday. An estimated 30,000 ballots remain to be counted in Clark County, the district’s population center, which will continue counting votes again on Monday.

Update — due to additional ballots counted in the Olympia and Vancouver areas and reported today, Joe Kent is now ahead of Ms. Herrera Beutler by 960 votes. That could change as there are still about 10,000 ballots that have not yet been counted, However, I doubt that any change will favor Ms. Herrera Beutler as the additional ballots are in Clark County – Mr. Kent’s home base. (He lives in Yacolt.)
Former Green Beret Kent is an awesome person and will make a great Congressman.
As for Newhouse, he survived the primary only because the opposition was fragmented. If his three Republican opponents had simply drawn straws for the privilege of staying on the ballot against Newhouse, he would be headed for retirement. One may hope that the conservatives of the 4th District will be better organized next time.
