Former President Donald Trump announced tonight that the FBI executed a search warrant at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.
Agents carried out a search of the premises as part of their ongoing investigation into Trump’s handling of presidential documents, including classified ones that were taken to his Florida residence after leaving the White House. In a statement blasting the raid, Trump said that agents “even broke into my safe.”
Trump was not on the property during the raid.
As CNN reports:
The search began early Monday morning and law enforcement personnel appeared to be focused on the area of the club where Trump’s offices and personal quarters are, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The Justice Department declined to comment to CNN, as did the White House. A White House official said it was not notified about the search.
The Justice Department is investigating Trump’s actions in two separate probes, one concerning his handling of documents which many argue flouted presidential records law and the other involving the attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election, culminating with the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.
The intensifying investigations come as Trump is widely expected to announce a 2024 White House run. Either before or after the midterms.

The FBI raid came days after Attorney General Merrick Garland told NBC News that the “most wide-ranging investigation” in Justice Department history was examining not only the rioters who invaded the Capitol and physically attacked officers, but was also examining whether anyone was “criminally responsible for interfering with the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to another.”
In February, the National Archives and Records Administration asked the Justice Department to examine whether Trump’s handling of White House records violated federal law, a story first reported by The Washington Post and subsequently confirmed by NBC News sources.
The status of that request remains unclear.
Though it has not made a public announcement, the FBI is reportedly not disputing Trump’s claims about the raid.
