Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.

According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.

The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.

** THE PDB IS BACK! APOLOGIES FOR THE BREAK IN MY PDB DUE TO A MAJOR HEALTH EMERGENCY. But I’m now back better than ever. And so is the PDB!

READ TODAY’S PDB BELOW:

NATIONAL SECURITY

The US military’s overdue reckoning with civilian casualties. When Gen. Richard D. Clarke retires this month as head of U.S. Special Operations Command, he will depart with a chest of hard-earned combat medals — but also with the recognition, now widely shared by his colleagues, that too many civilians died unnecessarily in America’s two decades of war in the Middle East.

Russia to hold sweeping joint war games with China, others. The Russian military says it will launch sweeping military drills in the country’s east that will involve forces from China.

CHINA THREAT

China criticizes US Navy Taiwan Strait transits, F-35B ‘lightning carrier’ USS Tripoli now in South China Sea. Two U.S. warships sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Sunday — the first since Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) visited Taiwan, sparking increased tensions between Washington and Beijing.

White House to ask Congress to approve $1.1B arms sale to Taiwan. Fears have grown in recent years that China is positioning itself to take Taiwan by military force.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

Ukraine wages counterattack to reclaim Russia-occupied Kherson. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged Russian troops to flee from an offensive launched by Ukraine’s forces near the southern city of Kherson, saying they were taking back their territory.

UN agency to inspect Ukraine nuclear plant in urgent mission. A U.N. nuclear watchdog team set off on an urgent mission Monday to safeguard the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia atomic power plant at the heart of fighting in Ukraine, a long-awaited trip that the world hopes will help avoid a radioactive catastrophe.

Pentagon: Russian military ‘unlikely to succeed’ at recruitment target. The U.S. government doesn’t think Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent effort to increase the size of his military by more than 130,000 troops will succeed, a senior U.S. Defense official said Monday.

NORTH KOREA THREAT

US, South Korea kick off ‘counterattack’ phase of Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise. American and South Korean forces on Monday commenced the second phase of their largest joint exercise in five years, marking another milestone in Seoul’s attempts to take wartime control of its military.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

Sell F-16s to Argentina. A 40-year-old war should not give China an arms-supply toehold in Latin America.

Iran’s first shipment of combat drones to Russia has already experienced failures. The move underscores deepening ties between Moscow and Tehran while also highlighting Russia’s struggles to supply its overstretched military.

Iraqi capital Baghdad wakes up to gunfire after night of violence. Violence has left at least 30 dead, as fighting between supporters of Muqtada al-Sadr and his rivals continues.

BIDEN AFGAN FIASCO

GOP lawmakers plan more hearings, oversight on Afghanistan withdrawal. If Republicans win control of the House or Senate in November’s midterm elections, next year’s congressional defense hearings could be dominated by questions about the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

US MILITARY AND SPACE

YES, PLEASE – Navy, HII pitch Congress for another two-carrier contract. As the U.S. Navy urges Congress to buy its next two aircraft carriers in a single contract, as it did for the most recent two, the service and manufacturer HII say the two-carrier approach has kept CVNs 80 and 81 on time and budget.

HOW ABOUT JUST RECRUITING AMERICANS WHO WANT TO SERVE? Marine Reserve wants more officer diversity from new enlisted program. The idea was to take enlisted Marines from underrepresented populations and show them what it takes.

READY FOR WAR! – Nursing airmen getting new pumping rooms as Air Force looks to clear obstacles for serving parents. Nursing moms serving in the Air Force will have more places to pump after three bases announced new lactation rooms, just the latest salvo in the service’s efforts to accommodate women who have children while in uniform.
