Judge Aileen Cannon has ordered the Justice Department to temporarily halt its investigation of materials seized by the FBI during its search of Mar-a-Lago until a special master can review them.
A special master is an independent third party, typically an attorney, appointed by the judge to review evidence seized in order to determine if anything taken into custody is protected, either by attorney-client privilege or in this case, executive privilege, as former President Trump has recently claimed.
In her ruling, Cannon said that given the extraordinary circumstances of the case the need to guarantee “the appearance of fairness and integrity” was of prime importance.
Politico further reports:
“Plaintiff faces an unquantifiable potential harm by way of improper disclosure of sensitive information to the public,” U.S District Court Judge Aileen Cannon wrote in a 24-page ruling issued on Labor Day.
Cannon’s order included permitting a so-called special master to review the seized materials for potential attorney-client and executive privilege. Prosecutors expressed exasperation at Trump’s demand to review for executive privilege, noting that there is no precedent for a former executive to assert privilege to bar review of materials by a sitting executive branch — particularly when the government has determined the need is urgent.
Cannon, a Trump appointee who was confirmed a week after Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election, gave the Justice Department and Trump’s lawyers until Sept. 9 to submit a joint filing to propose a list of special master candidates and outlining their duties and limitations. In the meantime, Cannon ruled that the documents would not be returned to Trump.
The Justice Department indicated that if Cannon were to make a ruling of this kind, she should formally enjoin the department, a format that would permit an appeal. A department spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Sorry but it’s too little too late! The DOJ/FBI has already gone through all those boxes and copied what they wanted, and of course added things they wanted to be “found”. The trust in our government has probably hit an all time low, and Biden calling 75 million people that voted for Trump a danger to our country didn’t help matters any. In reality it’s the democrats that are trying to destroy our republic and install their version of a socialist government, with them in power of course. If we don’t purge them all from our government, they will succeed in their mission.
