Vice President Kamala Harris has landed herself in the headlines once again.
During a visit to the Korean Peninsula’s Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the Vice President put her foot in her mouth when she commended the country’s strong alliance with the “Republic of North Korea.”
“It is an alliance that is strong and enduring,” she added, intending to refer to the Republic of Korea, which is South Korea‘s official name.
The heavily fortified DMZ, a buffer zone that separates North and South Korea, was Harris’ final stop on her diplomatic trip to Asia meant to signify America’s “rock-solid commitment” to regional security.
The Vice President’s visit came one day after North Korea fired a third ballistic missile into the sea following two other firings that occurred while she was visiting Japan.
“I cannot state enough that the commitment of the United States to the defense of the Republic of Korea is iron-clad and that we will do everything in our power to ensure that it has meaning in every way that the words suggest,” Harris said, according to Fox News. “In the North, we see a brutal dictatorship, rampant human rights violations, and an unlawful weapons program that threatens peace and stability.”
South Korean activists were seen protesting against the Vice President’s visit near the Presidential Office in Seoul. The protestors wore masks showing the faces of Harris and President Yoon as they demonstrated against the U.S.-South Korean alliance.
Harris’ visit to Asia triggered backlash over her refusal to visit the U.S.-Mexico border despite the ongoing migrant crisis and being tapped to lead the effort over a year ago.
Since taking office in 2021, the situation at the border has exploded. According to data released by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) border agents and officers at the U.S.-Mexico border have encountered 267,000 unaccompanied children since January 2021.
Border officials have also warned of the influx of dangerous drugs like fentanyl crossing into the United States due to the crisis.
According to Fox News, CBP agents seized an unprecedented 10,500 lbs. of the deadly drug in 2021, and seizures have already surpassed 12,000 lbs. so far this year — the most fentanyl ever seized in a single year in the United States. That much fentanyl could kill the entire U.S. population eight times over, the memo circulating among senators notes.
Last month, border encounters surpassed 200,000 for the first time. Meanwhile, agents seized a record 2,300 pounds of fentanyl at the southwest and coastal/interior U.S. borders last month, meaning the issue continues to worsen.
The number of migrants who have successfully crossed into the United States this fiscal year is on track to reach 2 million, with about 8,000 crossings per day.
