HOMELAND SECURITY

MacDill evacuated, Hurlburt and Eglin move aircraft as Hurricane Ian makes landfall. MacDill Air Force Base had been evacuated, the gates locked, as Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida today, Sept. 28. Other Air Force bases in Florida remained open but on a heightened state of alert, with aircraft evacuated from several installations out of caution.

CHINA THREAT

White House hosts first Pacific islands summit as China makes inroads. President Biden this week is welcoming to the White House for the first time more than a dozen Pacific island leaders whose countries are receiving fresh attention and resources as China asserts its own influence in the region.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

New Ukraine aid will buy 18 HIMARS and weapons to ‘disrupt’ drones. The Pentagon announced Wednesday it will contract with industry for $1.1 billion in military aid to Ukraine, including 18 High-Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems and other arms to counter drones Russia has been using against Ukrainian troops.

US MILITARY AND SPACE

24 hours from ‘go’: Next Space Force ‘responsive launch’ experiment aims to loft satellite in a hurry. The Space Force’s next “Tactically Responsive Space” experiment will feature an attempt to launch a satellite within 24 hours of receiving the “go” order, Lt. Gen. Michael Guetlein, head of Space Systems Command (SSC) said today, in what would be a drastic reduction in turnaround time.

Navy proposes stringent blood testing for elite SEALs training program to address drug use. Senior Navy officials are concerned about the use of performance-enhancing drugs by Navy SEAL trainees and have asked the Pentagon to approve blood testing to detect potentially illegal or banned substances used by the elite forces.
