One thing autocrats count on to maintain their authority on the world stage is deference. It need not be a physical bow or scrape. Prompt verbal displays of affection, loyalty or other means of humiliation are equally useful.
Consider this example from former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg after former British Prime Minster Boris Johnson dared call China a “coercive autocracy” at a Bloomberg-sponsored confab in Singapore:
Bloomberg, who invited Johnson and whose organisation was hosting the event in partnership with the Singapore government, acknowledged at the conference on Thursday that some attendees may have been “insulted or offended” by Johnson’s remarks.
But the businessman, a former mayor of New York and friend of Johnson, clarified that they were “his thoughts and his thoughts alone”. He added: “To those of you who were upset and concerned by what the speaker said, you have my apologies.”
With friends like Mike, Boris doesn’t need any more enemies.
And as for Bloomberg’s apology…I’m sure that if the Uyghurs currently rotting away in Chinese concentration camps heard it, they might have a few things to say about who has the real right to be upset, concerned or offended.
