Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that he threatened to “kick ass” during a heated confrontation last year, while firmly denying reports that he threatened to punch the now-acting Director of National Intelligence “in the face.”

The unusual exchange emerged during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, where Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) pressed Bessent about reports surrounding a confrontation between the two Trump administration officials during the summer of 2025.

According to Bessent, one key detail in the widely circulated account was inaccurate.

NATIONAL SECURITY

FINALLY – House bans TikTok on government devices. The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on House Administration on Tuesday announced that it is banning TikTok from all House-managed mobile devices “due to a number of security risks.”

America can do more for Ukraine. Should it? If the U.S. can spare only one Patriot battery, shame on us.

HOMELAND SECURITY

HORRIBLE TIMING! – Air Force quietly speeds up plans to eliminate spy planes on the front line of America’s fentanyl war. The US Air Force is moving up its timeline for scrapping a small fleet of surveillance planes used to help take fentanyl pills off the streets, telling National Guard pilots they must fly their aircraft to the boneyard by the end of the month so they can be stripped for parts.

US Supreme Court rules to keep Title 42, the pandemic-era policy to quickly turn away migrants, for now. The court ordered the Biden administration to continue enforcing the policy while Texas and other states that want to keep the Trump-era rule in place prepare their legal arguments.

NY National Guard on ground in Buffalo to aid blizzard recovery. Hundreds of National Guard troops are on the ground in Western New York providing badly needed help after a devastating winter storm brought the area to a chilly and snowy standstill, military officials said Tuesday.

FBI investigating shooting of man who ‘illegally gained access’ to Shaw Air Force Base. The FBI says it’s investigating a Friday shooting after an airman at Shaw Air Force Base shot a man who “illegally gained access” to the base.

CHINA THREAT

China tests America’s will with clashes along India border. The latest clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers across the Line of Actual Control (LAC) is a reminder that China, under President Xi Jinping, plans to remain aggressive and assertive after the 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party. With limited and manageable conflict in the Himalayas, the Chinese are testing the will of the United States to check China’s muscle flexing and the strength of burgeoning American partnerships in the Indo-Pacific, especially the one with India.

The US military plans to transform Indo-Pacific force posture in 2023. Amid rising tensions with China, the US military has sought to bolster its presence in Asia.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

Ukraine must demilitarize, Russian foreign minister says. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Ukraine must remove any military threat to Russia — otherwise “the Russian army (will) solve the issue.”

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 308. The front line in eastern Ukraine remains little changed despite an increase in fighting, with neither side making any major advances, said Britain’s defense ministry and Ukraine military analysts. The fighting was particularly fierce around the strategic eastern city of Bakhmut in Donetsk province and Svatove, further north in Luhansk province, according to Britain’s defense ministry.

Russia says it shot down Ukrainian drone near air base. The Russian military reported Monday that it shot down a Ukrainian drone approaching an air base deep inside Russia, the second time the facility has been targeted this month — again revealing weaknesses in Russia’s air defenses.

Despite Putin’s claims, Ukraine peace talks look unlikely in near future. As a year dominated by Russia’s war on Ukraine draws to a close, Vladimir Putin has made a point of suggesting he is open to peace talks despite evidence to the contrary, with comments that have been roundly dismissed by Kyiv and the West as a ruse at a time when the prospect of negotiations in the near future appears extremely remote

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY – NATO, MIDDLE EAST, ASIA, AFRICA

France to provide 2 satellites, receiving station to Poland. France will provide Poland with two observation satellites and a receiving station under a deal sealed Tuesday in Warsaw which Poland says will help its armed forces recognize threats early.

2 shot dead by al-Shabab militants in coastal Kenya. Two people were shot dead by al-Shabab militants and several houses torched in a rural area in coastal Kenya, police said Monday.

NORTH KOREA THREAT

South Korean response to North Korean military moves show trial and error, analysts say. South Korea’s aggressive response to North Korea’s record-setting pace of weapons tests this year has revealed the risks in the South’s defensive systems, a policy analyst said Tuesday.

S. Korea military sorry for failing to down North’s drones. South Korea’s president on Tuesday called for stronger air defenses and high-tech stealth drones while the military apologized for failing to shoot down North Korean drones that crossed the border for the first time in five years.

IRAN THREAT

US scrambles to stop Iran from providing drones for Russia. As the war in Ukraine grinds on, some officials have become convinced that Iran and Russia are building a new alliance of convenience.

SPACE

In major step, Space Force takes over all military satellite communications. The Space Force has taken over all of the Department of Defense’s military satellite communication functions, a major step in building the new service.

Space Force launches slick new website to recruit guardians of tomorrow. At just 3 years old, the youngest branch of the U.S. military hopes its flashy new website will attract new troops and overcome recruiting challenges that have plagued virtually every branch of the armed forces in recent years.

Senate passes orbit debris cleanup bill. The Senate passed legislation that would direct NASA to establish a program to remove orbital debris, but supporters of the bill will likely have to try again in the next Congress to enact it.

US MILITARY

GREAT CALL – What naming a ship after Fallujah means to those who fought there. The announcement of the name “Fallujah” for a forthcoming landing helicopter assault ship came on Dec. 13 from Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, who said it would honor the 100-plus Marines, sailors and other coalition forces who were killed during the two battles.

Close combat ‘mixed reality’ goggle fielding in 2023. After a few technical difficulties and delays, some soldiers in operational and training units will finally see the Army’s new “mixed reality” goggles in their hands in 2023.

The Army’s poised to select a Bradley replacement in 2023. Selections of the winners for the Army’s Bradley infantry fighting vehicle replacement are expected to be announced in 2023.

SOUTHCOM – Could the LCS fleet be getting a new mission? The Navy’s littoral combat ship fleet could see a new permanent mission as part of the fiscal 2023 defense bill that President Biden signed into law Friday.

Congress tells Air Force to upgrade skiplanes as Arctic heats up. Congress is urging the Air Force to start sketching out what it needs in a future fleet of skiplanes to help protect the Arctic.

Should the Pentagon invest in microreactors? It’s not clear whether the Department of Defense should continue to develop new types of microreactors — primarily because they have uncertain costs and regulations.
