Automakers don’t get their customer bases, but do they even care anymore?
When we and pretty much anyone thinks of Ram trucks, we of course still think of Dodge but what also comes to mind is rugged individualism, people who work hard for a living, braving all elements, etc. That’s what’s so laughable about the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV Concept revealed at CES this year. It looks like a giant toy from the Tron movies, not a trusty workhorse. What’s more, a robot conductive Ram Charger was revealed as well, showing just how out of touch executives are with the customer base.
This little robot looks like a Roomba, those weird circular vacuums which automatically go around your house cleaning up messes. Supposedly, this is because people who build houses, take care of animals, service electrical lines, etc. don’t know how to insert a plug. This is the kind of feature we’d honestly expect more in a Cadillac or BMW, not a Ram pickup truck.
The most hilarious part of the CES presentation, which you can see in the included video, is how this Ram Charger robot is supposed to serve the common, blue collar man. Let’s be honest, this is going to be the plaything for some rich guy who wears $800 flannel shirts in an attempt to seem relatable and down-to-earth. But marketing spin is life for so many automotive executives, so they’ll keep to the script which was formulated in a high-rise boardroom where they just know rugged individualism, or the aura of such a thing, sells.
That brings up another point: we already know there are increasing plans for municipalities, states, and other governments to take over wifi-connected thermostats so people can’t use the heat or AC too much. What would be stopping them from restricting when your Ram Charger or any other smart vehicle charger can fill up your vehicle battery? Need to get Timmy to soccer practice but your EV battery is depleted? Too bad, there’s too much grid load at the moment, so your charger won’t start replenishing the battery until 3 am. Don’t laugh, this could be the new normal.

Without a carbon base load electricity supply there would be any pm after dark extra juice for cars.
The automobile industry wants to jump from Point A to Point C, and the results are subpar to say the least.
They are trying to develop electric trucks, which require a power plant that batteries alone cannot maintain.
What is needed is Point B; the hybrid truck that can pull its weight over a long haul and not strand its driver and load on some highway or lonesome byway.
Just look at California, and its Governor who tells people NOT to charge their electric vehicles during times when they need them most.
This blind adherence to the Green New Deal is at the determent of today’s reality, and is not serving the public, only the pocketbooks of politicians forcing this undeveloped tech on those who deserve better.
One problem EV propagandists never mention is the EV batteries lose between 3-5% of their charge every 24 hours, even when not in use. Of course, leaving them charging all the time is not a great option either.
Green EV types never learn, but they have finally attained their wish – to ban new fossil fuel cars in CA by 2035. Now, (not in 2035) Gov Newsom rants they must comply with requirements to raise thermostats, cut back on using air conditioning, avoid heavy use of using large appliances (TV, stoves, fans, etc), turn off all unnecessary lights, and cut back on charging their EVs so much.
I worked on communication contracts in CA for Air Force Space Command from 1996 to 2001. Even then, with no fires to blame it on, there were anywhere from 5 to 6 black outs every year. Most lasted between 8 to 24 hours, but one lasted four days and spanned 100 miles of the central coast.
Through it all, green types were pushing to mandate increasing numbers of EVs. Yep. Plug thousands of EVs into an already failing grid. That’ll fix it. Oh, wait…
CA Greenies have fought all attempts to upgrade their grid and now expect things to magically work out. Hey! Maybe AOC will send in thousands of flying unicorns, rainbows, pixie dust, and glitter.
Something else they never admit is that we are not even remotely close to being able to supply the electricity needed NOW, without switching to EVs, without burning fossil fuels to generate it. Unless we go full nuclear, it is absurd to think we can generate enough electricity for large scale transition to EVs anytime in the foreseeable future.
