A third House Republican has come out in opposition to Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s plan to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., from the Foreign Affairs Committee.
McCarthy has moved to punish Omar for her history of anti-Semitism. However, Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., opposes the move, saying Republicans shouldn’t engage in “tit for tat” over members being stripped of their committee assignments.
The Daily Wire‘s Ryan Saavedra explains:
Buck’s support for Omar put Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s desire to remove her from the Committee in danger of failing after two other Republicans have already signaled opposition to it.
“I think that we should not engage in this tit-for-tat,” Buck said during an interview.
“I have a little bit less certainty about Congressman Schiff and Swalwell on Intelligence just because it’s a little bit different than a regular committee,” he added. “But I’m going to think through that and make a decision.”
Axios noted that his office says that he “wouldn’t support the removal of Rep. Omar” from the Committee.
Buck’s opposition follows that of Reps. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., and Victoria Spartz, R-Ind.
Mace called the debate a “First Amendment issue,” suggesting Omar’s opinions shouldn’t be punished under the guaranteed right to freedom of expression.
Spartz released a statement explaining her opposition. The Indiana Republican referenced the decision by then-Speaker Pelosi to strip Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., and Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., from their committees for insinuating/threatening acts of violence against Democrats:
Speaker Pelosi took unprecedented actions last Congress to remove Reps. Greene and Gosar from their committees without proper due process. Speaker McCarthy is taking unprecedented actions this Congress to deny some committee assignments to the Minority without proper due process again.
“As I spoke against it on the House floor two years ago, I will not support this charade again,” she added.
McCarthy can unilaterally remove Reps. Schiff and Swalwell from a select committee, he needs the support of a majority of the whole House to boot Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee.
He can only afford to lose four Republicans.

Omar’s speech isn’t actually what bothers most of we the people. It’s her hatred for all thing American and the fact that she is here on fraudulent activity. If I did some of the things she has done I’d be in jail for them. Yet she gets away with it, why? I think because she scream anti Muslim any time she’s brought up the short hairs gif her outrageous comments. Follow her money as well.
Omar came here to America under the pretext that her brother was her spouse, as I recall. She should be nowhere in government, let alone here in the USA. How did she receive citizenship, so quickly?

The First Amendment positively gives us the right to speak our minds without government response. However, our right to our opinion does not include carte blanche to be included on committees where that prejudice can be used to the detriment of others or the destruction of our country’s standing in leadership.
It would be utterly impossible for Ms. Ilhan Omar to give balanced review to matters coming before the Foreign Affairs Committee since she is so outspoken against one of America’s oldest and most steadfast allies.

As a member of the foreign affairs committee, she has a right to freedom of speech, but she also has the obligation to be professional, and represent her constituents not rant about her personal beliefs while on that committee
