Six House Republicans broke with GOP leadership on Wednesday, joining Democrats to advance legislation that would provide billions of dollars in additional support to Ukraine despite ongoing opposition from President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson.

The House voted 218-204 in favor of a discharge petition that forces consideration of the Ukraine Support Act, a measure that had remained stalled for more than a year after Republican leaders declined to bring it to the floor.

The vote marks one of the most significant bipartisan challenges to Republican leadership on foreign.

RIDICULOUSLY WOKE – SIMPLE MIX OF MEN AND WOMEN WOULD HAVE BEEN APPROPRIATE – Navy confirms it ‘made some changes’ to Super Bowl flyover, quietly shifting to all-female pilot team. US Navy says its intent was ‘always to maximize the participation of our women naval aviators in the flyover.’

Tell us: Has the COVID vax made you question other mandatory shots? Inoculations against disease have been part of U.S. military service since George Washington led the Continental Army, but none has created such controversy as the recently repealed mandate on vaccination against COVID-19.

NATIONAL SECURITY

How to bring innovation to America’s nuclear strategy. The United States should adopt a new nuclear strategy of innovation for deterrence resilience.

HOMELAND DEFENSE

After UFO shoot-downs, senators fret over holes in homeland defenses. Lawmakers on Tuesday voiced frustration that, after tens of billions of dollars spent on America’s sophisticated homeland defenses, low-tech objects of mysterious origins managed to enter North American airspace.

Air Force jets intercept Russian aircraft near Alaska. Four Russian aircraft, including a fighter jet and bomber, flew into a buffer zone of international airspace near Alaska Monday, according to a release from the North American Aerospace Defense Command on Tuesday, prompting a handful of U.S. Air Force jets to scramble and intercept them.

1st missile strike at aerial object over Lake Huron missed. The first U.S. missile fired at an unidentified aerial object over Lake Huron missed the target and “landed harmlessly” in the water before a second one successfully hit, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Tuesday.

Flying objects could turn out to be harmless, US says. Investigators have not yet found any evidence that the three objects shot down in recent days were connected to China’s program of balloon surveillance.

CHINA THREAT

US tracked China spy balloon from launch on Hainan Island along unusual path. The errant path of the large Chinese spy balloon across Alaska and the continental United States may have been caused by unusual weather conditions that pulled it off course.

UKRAINE WAR

11 countries to give tanks to Ukraine, as Kyiv is ‘contemplating’ spring offensive: US. Eleven countries have signed on to send tanks to Ukraine as military equipment donations ramp up in anticipation of a potential spring offensive, according to US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 357. Russian forces have made incremental progress in the last day or two in trying to capture Bahkmut, but it is unclear if it will fall, White House spokesperson John Kirby said. Moscow’s troops have been targeting Ukrainian positions along the front line in the Donetsk region, according to local officials. Only about 5,000 civilians are left in the city of a pre-war population of about 70,000, regional Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said.

US focuses on training Ukrainian troops to use less ammo. Western nations are growing concerned over their ability to quickly replenish stocks.

Milley says ‘Russia has lost’ in Ukraine, but the war continues. The war continues, for now.

FLIPPING IT ON TEHRAN AND MOSCOW – Suspected Iranian weapons seized by US Navy may go to Ukraine. The U.S. military is considering sending Ukraine thousands of seized weapons and more than a million rounds of ammunition once bound for Iran-backed fighters in Yemen, U.S. and European officials said.

Americans traveling to Russia warned they could be drafted to fight war against Ukraine. Americans in Russia or planning to travel there may be drafted into the army, the U.S. Embassy in Russia warned Monday.

Countdown to counteroffensive: Give Ukraine ATACMS before it’s too late. With renewed fighting expected, Kyiv needs the ability to attack deeper behind Russian lines in occupied lands, write a trio of FDD researchers.

Gen. David Petraeus: How the war in Ukraine will end. The war in Ukraine is at a stalemate, but that doesn’t mean it’s not changing. General David Petraeus predicts the war will look different this year with significant offensives likely staged by the two sides. Overall, the war continues to demonstrate basic weaknesses in Russia’s military, which was once thought to be one of the most capable in the world.

IRAN THREAT

Militant in Iran identified as al-Qaeda’s probable new chief: UN report. Saif al-Adel, who is wanted by the United States in connection with the 1998 bombings of its embassies in Tanzania and Kenya, has been identified by many countries as the new “de facto and uncontested” leader of al-Qaeda, according to a report by U.N. experts. Many U.N. member states also believe that Adel is located in Iran, the report said.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY – NATO, MIDDLE EAST, AFRICA, ASIA, LATIN AMERICA

Navy wants more Middle East countries in unmanned maritime awareness network. The commander of the U.S. Navy in the Middle East is pitching more countries in the region to use more unmanned systems to counter criminal activities and possible terrorist and military threats off their coasts, the service’s top officer in Central Command told reporters Monday.

NATO chief hints Finland, Sweden could join alliance separately. Jens Stoltenberg says Nordic nations becoming members hand in hand is not the ‘main question’ as Turkey continues to block Sweden.

Latvia to boost defense spending with naval missile, HIMARS deals. Latvian Defence Minister has announced the country’s military expenditure could reach the level of 3% of its gross domestic product earlier than planned, as she aims to sign contracts for the purchase of Naval Strike Missile anti-ship systems and six M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, this spring.

Philippines, US to hold biggest war games in years. The Philippines and the United States will this year carry out their biggest joint military drills since 2015, Manila’s army chief said on Wednesday, against a backdrop of growing tensions with China in the South China Sea.

SPACE THREAT

Out of control: DoD reviews use of super-secret SAP classification, for space programs and beyond. John Plumb, DoD assistant secretary for space policy, suggested overuse of SAPs is hindering information sharing across programs and, more importantly, to allies.

US Space Force crafting new schedule for GPS ground system. An already delayed U.S. Space Force effort to develop a modern, cybersecure GPS ground system is facing new schedule setbacks.

US MILITARY, ROBOTICS AND AI

UNLESS IT TURNS INTO PARTISAN, ANTI-CONSERVATIVE WITCH-HUNTING – Sailors, soldiers need skills to fight propaganda, Navy’s Cleary says. Members of the U.S. military must beef up their media literacy skills as propaganda proliferates and sources of dubious information explode at home and abroad, according to the Navy’s principal cyber adviser, Chris Cleary.

Marines issue warning on amphib fleet. The assistant commandant says 31 large amphibious warfare ships are needed to avoid risk.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, NOT SOME GUY NAMED AL – AI flies F-16-inspired jet for 17 hours in first test with tactical aircraft. Artificial intelligence flew an aircraft based on an F-16 fighter jet for more than 17 hours, the first time that AI was used to fly a tactical aircraft.

YOU ARE MARINES – HACK IT OR PACK, JARHEADS – Being a Marine is enough of a bonus, No. 2 Marine Corps general says. “Your bonus is that you get to call yourself a Marine.”

Defrauding veterans would be a federal crime under bill pushed by senators. Defrauding veterans of their benefits would be its own federal crime under a bipartisan bill recently reintroduced in the Senate.
